What remains of the Childrens Ward
The Princess Elizabeth Ward at the Southport Infirmary site is still standing, although most of the slates have been removed from the roof.
I wonfer what they intend to do with it.

That building's special to me, as it's where I recieved my first ever Manual Handling training. Strangely, I keep forgetting the entire concept of how to handle things manually after precisely one year, but fortunately we get exactly the same training every year, so it's all good.

I remember it well also, i was a nurse cadet on that ward along with Harker, Bob Martin. then a student nurse on all the wards including Princess Elizabeth ward. I had a very big argument with another nurse on that ward concerning a small baby who had just died in my arms. After an investigation she was dismissed and i was commended for the support that i had given to the family, colleagues and the care i had given to the baby.
It has been said that when helping people change their behaviour – “the spirit in which help is offered” is the most important aspect, more than the degree of skills and knowledge of the helper!

A few years ago I did some manual handling training there. I was sat looking around at what clues there were left of it being a ward, like you could see where the curtain rails had been to mark out bed spaces, and other things like that. I remember thinking that it was a similar lay out to the ward where I had been when I was a kid, I must have only been about 4. I have a really clear memory of lots of things from being that sort of age, and I clearly remember where the nurses station was in relation to my bed, and where the door was that my mum used to come through when she arrived, and where she went to get herself a drink. I also remember her bringing me a cheese spread butty in a plastic bag becuase I didn't like the food in hospital!
It was only after the training when I went back to the ward where I was working that I found out that it was the old children's ward, so it was the very place where I had been looked after when I was little. So no wonder it looked so familiar!!

I too learned how to handle manuals in there.
I also spent many hours in there in 1972 sitting at my younger brother's bedside as he gradually succumbed to a brain tumour before passing away at the age of 8.
A couple of the inside before demolition...

What a sad story and what sad memories this place must bring back for you MG Man, I'm sure you must still feel such a sad loss even after all these years, my heart certainly goes out to you.
Do you think that's really wise?
