I have been informed that there was once a castle in Southport, in the area of Lord Street West / Castle Walk - called Castle Belmont or Belmont Castle. Does any one know if this is true and if there is any information I can find on it ? If so post a reply please. Im sceptical as Ive always though Southport as a town was not that old ( in comparison to Liverpool and other areas).

In 1820 Robert Holt from Wigan built the Castellated Belmont Castle in Birkdale. Belmont Castle was later used as a school before being demolished in 1890, when the lease expired.
