Victoria Brewery Birkdale
A couple of years back we were refurbishing the old staff quarters at the Royal Clifton hotel and I came across this bottle in the roof space. It is a bottle of Burdock and Dandelion from W.H.Webbs Victoria Brewery Birkdale. I just wondered if anyone was familiar with the name or remembers anything about the company. It is interesting how things have changed over the years, no sell by date in evidence on this little green bottle!
Cheers

Webb's, I seem to remember, were primarily a table water company making lemonade, cream soda etc. I even seem to remember that we bought their stuff for our chippy and I occasionally went round on their lorry delivering in about 1950.
If life is just a bowl of cherries then why do I always get the pip!

When I was a lad there were only two "pop" makers in Southport: Merchants and Webbs

Thanks Blowick, you've just cleared my mental block. I recalled Webbs but could not, for the life of me remember Merchants.

Thanks for the replies.
Great to hear first hand stories from the past. The link to the earlier post is very informative, WH Webbs were a mineral water maunfacturer and medical herbalist based at 131 Upper Aughton road and the factory was demolished mid 70's.
Thanks again.

My Grandfather delivered for Webbs up until his retirement in the mid 60's. We have a photo of him and his work mate with the lorry.

I seem to remember a firm called Pooles making deliveries of pop in the ealy sixties, or is my memory playing tricks on me, also the firm Corona who did so nationally, I can distinctly remember TV adverts for the Corona man from that time.
Just think then we didn't even know what a pizza was let alone have one delivered.
Do you think that's really wise?

Yes I remember Aerowater, it used to come in bottles with those old fashioned glass ball and rubber stopper in it that you used to have to pop out, similar to what you get on some Grolsch beer bottles these days.
Do you think that's really wise?

Hi My great grandfather and grandmother had a mineral water business (mentioned in a previous thread about a Mook and Co. bottlle) called Mook and Co, The Albion Works, Mosley St. Birkdale which they sold to Webbs I believe to be around the 1930's, the old building is still there just before it merges with Upper Aughton Road. If you find the thread about the bottle there is a lot of interesting information about the start of my great grandparents business. (They also used to deliver their pop bu horse and cart like aerowater).

I am a little late commenting on this thread but Merchants was my great grandfathers business. He sold it to a brewery in Liverpool. My father remembers it well. I would be really interested if anyone has any information or photos of the factory.
