    The Victoria Hotel

I'm trying to find out some information about the hotel. Does anyone know when it closed? I know it was used during the war (World War 2) for the civil service. Did it reopen as a hotel after the war? I think it was demolished in 1970

The place it used to sit on is now Flats do remember it was a scruffy place in the end vic dive I think they called it 😳 It probably was a hotel at one time ? Older posters will see this and confirm 😊

My mum worked there for around a year in the early 50's
She doesn't remember much about it apart from it was very boring, compiling information from census forms onto punch cards. Once in work you were locked in for the day! Apparently she was one of the lucky ones, sat by a window where she could look down onto Neville St below.

I don't know much about the Victoria Hotel but I do know that the Vic Dive was actually only the Vaults. I went in there once.

Weather forecast for tonight: Dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning.

We used to go in the bar upstairs for a beer on Thursdays before going to the Somewhere Else club across the road. It was very nice with velvet chairs. It was also very quiet ! The Vic Dive downstairs was wild ! Never went in there !

Do you recognise this bar chas?

I think the photo was taken after 1950 and before 1962.

Although it looks familiar I dont know where that is. Interestingly though, the Jaguar Mark 2 parked at the kerb would be a 1967 model or thereabouts.

I remember the steps up to the lounge bar well. I would think that this photo is about 1971 looking at the fashions. The Somewhere Else Club can be seen further down on the LHS with its canopies over the upstairs windows. Sure I used to go out with the girl on the right with the long hair !
