    ABC Soputhport

The cladding started rotting in the fifties, ABC decided to place the pale blue and dark blue cladding above the entrance area in the early sixties.

Norman Wisdom's film 'What's Good For The Goose' - which had been filmed around Southport - didn't the film have its premiere at the ABC ? Did anyone on site go to the premiere ? And finally was anyone you know in it as an extra ?

    Regal Cinema...late 50s

Hello Jason........ The Regal was my favourite Saturday evening venue of all the cinemas in Southport...I remember one particular occasion when the 'next weeks' trailer was showing a Randolph Scott Western ....All the girls in the audience groaned and all the lads cheered!....

I have heard of the Norman Wisdom film being filmed in and around the old Palace Hotel but I was told it was not one of his better movies.I myself have never seen it in fact so can't judge.
I think this film has been discussed before in other places ..can't remember where I saw it but I bet pedoja will know!

BTW The Forum was a great place for Abbott and Costello movies.

Thanks to 'On the spot ' for the pix. They revive a few memories!

    What's Good For The Goose

    Hello Gedsum,
We frequently home in on the same link!
I bet Pedoja and Babs were in the film starring Norman Wisdom.I seem to recall that the ABC Regal was tarted up for the premiere.

It was a very sad visit in the late seventies and early eighties, when the stalls were shut, and the centre piece lights on the ceiling were not illuminated during intermissions.

Always a very comfortable cinema, well managed, and good presentation.

    Regal

The Regal certainly lived up to it's name ,but glad I never saw it in that state(late 70s)....pity that all good things must inevitably come to an end..

    Babs

    Babs,

To differentiate between what you now call an ABC cinema, and the original ABC - it is easier to state the ABC Regal for the cinema that was opposite Safeways.

The film 'Whats Good For The Goose' was made in Southport in 1968 or 1969, it included Norman Wisdom, Sally Geeson and Judy Geeson, plus loads of extras from Southport. Babs are you sure you weren't an extra in it ?

    Missed vocation

    Sorry Babs,

You and your mum missed your chance for stardom in 1968! If you were on a day trip - the film crews were in the resort for several weeks.

    Changed her life

    Babs,

If it had changed your life, would you have contributed as much as you do to this web site ? I was under the impression you were born and bred in Southport. nWhat year did you move to Southport ?

    Cool Extras

I remember the film crews asking all the guys on scooters to drive up to a temporary coffee bar at the Palace that they had made. I think they got paid for this. It was not the only film that was made there.

I also remember playing in a band on Saturday morning for the kids at the ABC. we were paid 10 Shillings (Between Five of us) For this meagre sum we rocked out "Peggy Sue" and various Bo Diddley stuff. Earned the same amount at the Odeon. The Boss of the Odeon's son, Ian Lloyd now fronts a respectable band in Brighton. Hope we influenced him !

Correct me if I am wrong but did Boris Karloff make a film in Southport, something to do with the Palace Hote?

    Regal

My Mum worked as an Usherette in the early 50’s. I used to get a free ticket every week.

Used to belong to the Saturday morning ABC minors in that era. Still remember the words to the song.
