Old Shops on Upper Aughton Road

I do not spend that much time in Southport, but have noticed that a lot of shops in the surburb areas are closing and have now just become houses, - the best example is on Upper Aughton Road, where the stretch of shops that were between the railway gates and the Blundell arms have nearly all disapeered, plus on eastbourne road as well.

Does anyone remember any of the shops on Upper Aughton Road. - I have memorys of the Butchers Wraggs who has been there for ages and closed about 5 years go, the Post office, and the Printers opposite the Blundell Arms. I also went to a video shop to get the old beta max from.

Was their ever a shop on the corner of Elm Road and Upper Aughton Road - opposite the antiques shop.

I can not find any old pictures of the street, but like the 360 picture on this website, but here is a picture of my local.

I used to work at 19 Upper Aughton Road, next to the post office. It would be around 1967/68 I think and the company was Robert Rimmer Ltd. a building contractor. There was a wide entry to the side of the shop frontage and we had offices and a woodworking shop down there. There was a sandwich and pie shop at the other side of the entry if I remember rightly. At the other end of the row, there was a bookies shop. The Upsteps was my favourite spot for lunch in those days.

    There was!

I used to buy cheese snips for my Ballroom dance tutor there.

I don't remember her dancing much... too many cheese snips!

One of her assessors was "The Trout's! father ..... he was massive.

I'm only 4 ft 11 ins as an adult, and he must have been 6 ft 5ins..... and the old cow made me dance with him! She must have had a bad sense of humour!

Has your brother still got his ginger hair, the Trout? Or is it grey, like mine?!

There was also a TV repair shop along there, before my time but it was my Great Aunte and Uncles shop. Not sure exactly but I would think it shut in the 70's though I may be wrong could have been earlier.

I remember them all well. I remember W.Lane laundry, I used to go to school with Wendy. Mavis used to have a wool shop, Greysons was a DIY shop, Halls had a newsagents, I always remember when we went decimalisation as I went into the sweet shop (by post office) and bought 6p worth of sweets and had to put loads back because my 6p was only worth 2 1/2p

according to a 1909 directory number 19 was an undertakers (James Bentham), 19a was a news-agents and sub post office (miss Ethel Walker), corner of Mosley st, then (Walton Rd) 87 Green Grocer (Charles Shaw), opposite corner St Peters School, now the ATC, just before the corner of Elm rd, 115, Birkdale Brewery co, (Crown brewery), 119, on the corner grocers ( Mrs Ada Hassall, 121, grocer (Richard Scotson) 131, W H Webb Herb Beer Brewery, on the opposite side of the rd number 20 which I think must be the Upsteps it's recorded as Mrs Sarah Ann Whitehead beer retailer, Blundell Arms Hotel, (George Coke)

Haha, Well you were close with my Dad, he's 6"4, and according to my brother it was "strawberry blonde", not Ginger. But yeah he's still ginger when it's not dyed blonde. What hair he has left anyway

Which dancing tutor did you go too? Was the one down a dingy passage way between the Blundell and St teresa's Club? I can't remember the owners name, Jean?

As Tillymint says there was Halls Newsagents next to the ginnel leading to Grove street, next door (or maybe 2 doors away) the used to be a barbers shop run by a little italian bloke (Loui?). I used to dread going there as I always got a pudding bowl type of cut, and his clippers were always blunt enough to cut you.

On the opposite side by the bus stop, there was a general store (Delahuntys?) and I think the Betamax shop might have been in Halls old premises, if not it was definitly next door. They moved there from Birkdale Village (next door to the Fruit & Veg Shop).

There was obviously more around there at the time, but of little interest to a young kid though, so I can't really remember them. I do remember buying my first bag of Beef monster Munch in the newsagents next to the crossing, for 2p and thinking they were the best crisps ever invented.

Indeed Kopite, many a time after the Road Gates had been closed, the Crossing Keeper would open the Pedestrian gates to let me and my brother across.

if you look cleary on the side of 121 Upper Aughton Road(Corner of Elm), you can still see the shop signage in the brickwork.
