Jim Whiteside's horse and cart fruit and veg round in Birkdale.
Does anyone remember Jim Whiteside. Jim had a horse and cart and had a fruit and veg business in Birkdale back in the fifties and sixties. He lived in Shaftesbury Road and had stables at the back of the house where his white horse Sunbeam lived.
Jim's round took in Shafesbury Road, Liverpool Road, Clifford and Lyndhurst Roads as well as Longford,Bedford, Barrett, Clinning and Dinorwic roads.
I was a young lad of about seven years old when I first worked for him, every Saturday and weekdays during school holidays..
He also had a son (also Jim) who had a brown horse and had a round in the Shaws and Guildford road areas.

Yeah you are correct, Jim did have a finger missing.
I once remember two men in Lyndhurst Road actually came to blows over the horse sh*t. As one man was shovelling it into his bucket the other said it was his because the horse had dumped outside his house. They argued for a while before actually stating to fight. Happy days eh!

I'm not surprised it was mouse ridden, with two horses a compost midden and two carts full of fruit. The place must have stunk. I'm sure he wouldn't have been allowed to be there in this day and age.

Oh dear! Am I sussed! I used to go round to Mr Whitsides for my mum. If he couldnt be bothered coming out he would send me in the shed to get some spuds. I may have got one or two too many. Never knew about the mice, thank god.
