Scores of twitchers have arrived in Southport as a rare Kentish Plover has been spotted just south of the Pier.
Kentish Plover: Small shorebird with dark grey legs, short black bill, and white underparts. Pale-brown back. Wings pale-brown and black with white stripe. White collar with black on side of neck, pale-brown crown with red-brown nape, and black and white front. Face white with black line through eye.
Range and Habitat
Kentish Plover: Former breeder, now only a scarce passage visitor to the UK. Birds breed in parts of Europe and Central Asia during the summer and winter in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Migrant visitors to the UK will likely be seen at the coastline on beaches and mudflats, and sometimes on lakes or rivers.
