Take a gander at a verandah - or several! Discover the history, design and challenges of Southport's elegant glass and iron verandahs on a gentle walk (a dander) along Lord Street.

Southport is renowned for its cast iron verandahs and the shelter they provide on the rare occasions when it rains! They're an important historical part of Southport's buildings and streetscapes, but they also present challenges in a seaside location. This linear walk will reveal the hidden history of the verandahs - from Victorian canopies to modern versions - and point out some of the many different designs and details. We'll also look at how they work, and what happens when they don't. There will be top tips on dealing with rusty cast iron - a verandah or a garden gate - and how to keep rainwater flowing off any building.

Whether you love Southport and want to discover more of its history, or are an owner tussling with the challenges of cast iron and glass, this walk will show why the verandahs are fascinating and important, and how simple maintenance will keep them sparkling for years to come.

There's also a free copy for all attenders of the 'Guide for the Maintenance and Repair of Lord Street's Verandahs', full of insights and advice to take away.
