Lakeland Leather’s recent campaign encouraged customers to recycle their unwanted jackets in support of Cancer Research UK and in a bid to campaign against throwaway fashion. The Lake District-based fashion retailer launched a 3 week campaign throughout all their stores across the UK to encourage the recycling of unwanted jackets to raise money for the charity. Cancer Research UK carries out life-changing work by funding scientists and doctors to help beat cancer sooner. As a charity they rely solely on the generosity of the public to fund all work. Last year a total of £652 million was spent. The campaign was so well received by customers that as well as donating unwanted clothing, customers also gave monetary donations. Lakeland Leather has accumulated over 200 jackets and £1500 worth of cash donations for the charity. This is a total of £4,350 worth of donations and a van full of recycled clothing!Martin Foster, Managing Director at Lakeland Leather, said: “It has been amazing to see how generous our customers have been in supporting the Cancer Research. The store staff have also been extremely passionate in spreading awareness and supporting the campaign.”
As well as raising money for an important cause we have also encouraged the recycling of unwanted clothing in a sustainable, ethical and morally-conscious way.” Marie Tomlinson, Store Manager of Lakeland Leather Southport, said: “Seeing how many charity bags full of clothing were donated was wonderful, the support from our customers for the charity and the enthusiasm to recycle unwanted clothing has been incredible.”Cancer Research UK will resell the unwanted clothing in their charity shops across the UK to fund their invaluable research.
