Today, we are launching our #ItsBehindYou safety campaign.
The number of search and rescue jobs for people cut-off by the tide is at its highest. That is why we need your help to check whether #ItsBehindYou.
When you’re at the beach, check to see whether the water has crept behind you while you’re relaxing on the beach. Keep checking whether #ItsBehindYou.
If you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

The trouble is that visitors do not know what they are looking at. They just turn around and look at a tide some distance away and feel quite safe.
I remember being quite a way out on the beach and saw the tide coming in. There was a group of young people from the South sitting nearby and had no indication of moving. I went up to them and quite politely said they would be wise if they moved back now as the tide was heading in. All I got was a mouthful of abuse from them and they were saying "We are not children, we can see the tide" I explained that the tide would move around behind them, and that is why everyone else is moving back. A bit more abuse - so I left them. When I was at a safe distance - I stood and watched the group. I know it is mean - but I felt quite happy when they had to remove their shoes and run through the sand and the mud to get back. Maybe next time they will listen.
