Southport returned to winning ways by picking up maximum points with a win over Hereford on a dramatic night at the Pure Stadium.

Three days after their elimination from the Emirates FA Cup, the Port responded in ideal fashion in a game that had everything.

The home side edged a five-goal thriller, which also included a disallowed goal and a penalty save from the visitors.

The home side got off to a great start, Zehn Mohammed turning in a low right-wing cross from Reagn Ogle from a matter of yards.

It was the defender’s fifth goal of the season and after Saturday’s loss against Altrincham it gave the Port a platform to settle.

Ryan Astles had already gone close, heading over a long throw-in from Reagan Ogle as the Poet looked to take control.

Peter Vincenti should have levelled when he turned over the rebound after a free-kick from Brad Ash as parried by Charlie Albinson.

The visitors thought they had equalised when Stephen Dawson found the target from distance, only for the goal to be ruled out for a handball in the build-up.

Yet Hereford did go in at half-time on level terms, Reece Style converting a penalty after he was judged to have been tripped by Mohammed.

The half ended on an even more concerning note for the home side when Ogle left the field on a stretcher.

Hereford were awarded their second penalty just after the hour when Albinson felled Dawson in the area, but this the the Port goalkeeper stood strong to save Styche’s spot-kick,

The Port then battled back with two delightful goals, David Morgan turning brilliantly before riling home a shot after receiving the ball from Connor Woods.

Substitute Devarn Green soon added a third with a blistering strike from the right side of the penalty area.

There was still time for another twist as Kelsey Mooney turned in a long throw from Jordan Cullinane-Liburd but the Port held on
