Southport ended their home campaign with a 2-2 draw with Kidderminster Harriers, the ninth home draw of the season.
As has been the pattern in recent games the first half was a scrappy affair brought to life by an special goal from 20 yards by Dion Charles that flew into the Kidderminster goal in stoppage time of the first half.
David Morgan and Jordan Richards had tested Tom Palmer in the Kidderminster goal earlier in the half and apart from a couple of half chances the visitors had rarely threatened Dan Hanford in the Southport goal.
The second period was a much more entertaining affair for the sun drenched Bank Holiday crowd.
Milan Butterfieild equalised for Kidderminster in the 61st minute with a cool finish.
It took Southport just four minutes to retake the lead when Palmer could only push away Matty Platt’s 18 yard strike and Charles was on hand to finish from 2 yard out
It was Charles’14th league goal of the season which takes him one ahead of Jack Sampson in the race for leading scorer.
Southport had chances to increase the lead through Sampson and Morgan but with Kidderminster coming more into the game they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Hanford who wrestled Kane Richards to the ground. Joe Ironside confidently finished from the spot to make it 2-2.
It was a much more open game with chances at both ends with Devarn Green going close for The Sandgrounders and Ironside almost giving our visitors all three points.
In the 93rd minute Hanford made an excellent point blank save from White to ensure the points were shared.
The final whistle sounded for the final time at The Merseyrail Community Stadium this season and the players went over to the Southport crowd to thank them for the support and were given a well deserved round of applause for their efforts.
Southport’s final game is at Blyth Spartans who will be expecting a big crowd when a win will see them certain of a play off place. Blyth will be going in to the game on the back of seven wins in a row.
It will be the second season running that Southport travel to the North East on the final day of the season to face a team in play off contention.
