Following enquiries we can confirm the incident at Royal Birkdale Golf Course yesterday evening (Thursday 11 April 2019) involved a paramotor, not a microlight as originally reported.
At around 7pm police and other emergency services were called to Royal Birkdale Golf Course following reports the paramotor had crashed.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue attended to extinguish the fire caused by the crash, and the North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance. A man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
A police investigation is underway on behalf of the Coroner to establish the identity of the man and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Road closures will be in place on the Coastal Road including Shore Road and Weld Road and we advise motorists to avoid the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police CC. 5 police vehicles and 1 blocking each end of the costal road = 7.
Didn't know we had so many in Southport.

Blimey, I am interesed in aircraft, but never heard of a Paramotor. It is nothing like a Microlight...miles smaller.
But what puzzles me, is why the Boys in Blue closed Weld Road and Shore Road, they are no where near the incident.
