This little KA tried to avoid our patrol in Southport. Checks reveal driver has no license or insurance. Driver #reported for summons and vehicle #seized. If you come to Southport without insurance you can expect to leave without your car.

Routine stopcheck of this motor vehicle in Southport reveals that the driver was disqualified from driving. Driver interviewed at the roadside and reported for summons. Vehicle seized and the driver can look forward to a few more years on his disqualification.

Great, another muppet off the road - for now, until they buy another banger that is.

That's the problem isn't it? There's no real deterrent. They simply ignore the ban and find another cheap car to drive around in. Until they start cracking down hard with jail terms for multiple offences, it will simply carry on happening.

Always amused me when underage joyriders were given driving bans as a supposed punishment.

Prior to the laws in regard to Taking Without Consent being updated, the driving bans were a way to close various loopholes that defence solicitors would use to try and get their clients a reduced sentence at the very least.

A favourite 'defence' was they were only 'borrowing' the car and would leave a small amount of cash to allegedly pay for any fuel that they had used, negating theft and as it couldn't be proved 'beyond reasonable doubt' they'd walk away. The driving ban was a means to an end as it was easy to prove and after a couple of occasions, it would be seen as a course of action, with a more substantial sentence available as an option.
