Lancashire County Council's Cabinet has agreed to commission a strategic outline business case for the further development of a Skelmersdale rail link.
This is the latest stage of the detailed process needed to bring a new railway line and station to the town.
The business case will provide a detailed evaluation of the proposed scheme, looking at the viability of the proposals, cost estimates and possible timescales.
The county council is working with Network Rail and Merseytravel on the plans, which include changes on the road network that would be needed to accommodate a new line and station.
Once the strategic outline business case has been prepared, the Cabinet will be asked for a decision on the next stages for this project.

A new railway and station?? I thought it was a station built on the existing Wigan-Kirkby line out in the wilds of Pimbo Industrial estate.
