The middle of Chapel Street is now a cycle lane with graphics painted onto the surface. There is also a sign that says "No Cycling"

The ‘No Cycling’ sign has been there since they pedestrianised Chapel Street, but now it’s been opened up to cyclists, they’ll take the sign down soon.
In my opinion, (and everyone’s got one so feel free to comment if you disagree), Chapel Street should remain as no cycling. While the shared pathways on the likes of the Coast Road are one thing, people wandering between shops, distracted with their shopping, families etc, it won’t be long before there’s some sort of a collision.

It isn't pedestrianised then, is it? It's fairly dangerous to get hit by a bike going at speed, why not go the whole hog and let cars through?

Correct, that isn't going to work. There's no way pedestrians will take any notice of the cycle lane and just walk across it. Then the 5 cycles a day that use it won't keep to the cycle lane either.

Apologies if my post came across as anti-pedestrian. The point I was trying to get across is some shared spaces work, others wouldn’t. My 8 year old son walks about in his own little world at the best of times when we’re in town, before the added problems of bikes.
Before the proposed changes, there were more than 5 cyclists a day in Chapel Street ignoring the signs!

Surely not, cyclists ignoring the No Cycling signs? Unheard of cyclists ignoring rules :-)

Bit like motorists as they’re all paragons of virtue as well! :-D

No, I know they're not, but a certain poster on here is always complaining about motorists, quite rightly, while refusing to admit that any cyclist ever does anything wrong.
If he admitted that cyclists also do wrong things, people on here might have a bit more empathy with him.

Cyclists (& skateboards, etc.) on Chapel St. have been commonplace before now.
Will pedestrians be very surprised?
If this image represents the full extent of the Share with Care Space markings and indicators, then it's a weak effort; I'd hoped there would be more in the way of lane markings. Regular visits by Special Constables, certainly in the early stages ensuring that the "Care" is duly observed, may be necessary.
Before this scheme, I have often approached Chapel St from Hoghton St. and been faced with the choice of dismounting and pushing my bicycle, or else diverting around via Lord Street; neither convenient. Not surprisingly, I hope Share with Care is successful. Mixing modes of traffic always presents potential problems. Collisions happen; the proliferation of mobility scooters also poses risks to walkers. Cyclists and pedestrians will, of course, need to take care.

But at least motorists obey red lights and traffic flow on one-way streets. We don't weave all over the roads and footpaths, in the face of oncoming traffic and when we see a red light we don't mount the kerb and drive over the pedestrian crossing to carry on our journey unhindered.
Cyclists, obeying the rules of the road and road signs? You're having a laugh!

Sounds like you’re the one having a laugh! If all these motorists obeyed red traffic lights, collisions at junctions would be almost non existent and there’d be no need for red light cameras! Plenty of drivers go down London Street from the Hoghton Street towards the monument, which is for buses, taxis and cycles. Big difference is that with cyclists it’s anti-social, a driver it’s dangerous, which is why you need to pass a test!
By the way, I’m all for enforcing the rules for all road users, I’m not anti-car!

Just come in from town, I saw a grey tranny type van stopped at the crossing by the Town Hall soon as the lights started to change floored it and must have been doing 40 through the Monument lights which are out of action.

And I'm not anti-bike. What I AM "anti", is anyone who uses the roads and doesn't follow the rules of the road. It just so happens that on my travels the vast majority of those I see breaking rules are cyclists. Yes, I do see motor vehicles too.
Then we have to suffer stupid schemes to help cyclists and block roads for cars when the majority of vehicular movement is motor-driven.
Sefton council are killing Southport.
