Residents in Birkdale are being offered a free tree to plant in their garden. Birkdale Lib Dem Councillors have worked with Mersey Forest and the local authority to secure a number of whips for residents to plant. Whips are young trees around 2-3 feet high.

The whips are available to collect from the car park of the ‘Red Chapel' Methodist Church at the junction of Liverpool Road and Sandon Road, between 11.00am and 12.00 noon this Saturday 15th February.

Cllr Simon Shaw (pictured with a recently planted street tree) said: “As councillors we try to get more street trees planted, but the problem is that these are quite expensive –around £250 to £400 each”

“We hope that scores of trees will be planted in Birkdale gardens as a result of this scheme. The varieties available are rowan, elder, birch, cherry and guilder rose all of which are great for planting at this time of year.

Cllr Iain Brodie Browne added “Trees and woods can help to improve the quality of our air, cool our warming plant, reduce the risk of flooding as well as function as an excellent store of carbon. As one local resident pointed out to me this will not solve the climate crisis but it is a step that important contribution that many of us can take.

Now there's a plant if ever I saw one. Not sure if it's a hard wood or a soft wood, but definitely wooden.
