Spring time means a baby boom at Martin Mere! Visit us during May half term (25 May – 2 June) for a chance to see the whole egg-to-duckling process. In our Exhibition Hall, you’ll be able to see ducklings chipping their way out of their eggs live, and you’ll also be able to see adorable newly-hatched ducklings up close in brooders.
You’ll also be able to see inside eggs at different stages of development with our popular egg candling workshops. Come along to see how staff can check how a duckling is developing inside an egg, and you may even be able to hear a duckling chirruping from inside the egg!
Our on-site duckery will also be open for you to come and see where ducklings spend the first few months of their life before they are moved into our grounds. When you visit the duckery, you’ll also be able to see our newest arrivals – 4 Andean Goose goslings. It’s been over 10 years since we’ve been able to successfully breed Andean Geese at the centre, so it's really exciting to see this new pairing working so well with four goslings hatching.
As well as plenty of fluffy ducklings for you to see, we’ve also got loads of other activities for the whole family to enjoy. Grab a net and delve into pond dipping in our brand new Pond Zone - we’ve everything you need to uncover incredible underwater life: nets, trays, magnifying glasses, identity charts, and our friendly Learning Team are on-hand to help.
For the young adventurers, there’s plenty of areas to explore. Venture through three types of ‘wild’ wetland in one mile-long VIP walk – wellies are a must in the Wild Walk area! And for an additional experience during your visit, head over to our Canoe Safari and Boat Tour area. Pick up a paddle and canoe your way around our award-winning kilometre-long Canadian canoe trail, or if you’re wanting a more relaxing experience, drift away on a 30 minute expertly-guided boat tour.
For thrill seekers, make sure you check out our Rushes play area. From zip wire screams and scramble net laughs, to treehouse trailblazing and water zone wonders, our huge adventure playground is a total rush for ages 3 to 12. Get the family together and spend some time in the great outdoors this half term.

And hopefully you’ll check your oven is ready by sticking your own head in it first.
