Merseyside Police is working with Liverpool FC and urging fans to continue to follow the latest Covid-19 restrictions ahead of Wednesday’s game against Real Madrid (14 April).

The game is the second leg in the Champions League quarter-final, and kicks off at Anfield behind closed doors at 8pm.

Despite the further easing of lockdown restrictions this week, we are encouraging fans to act responsibly and in line with the latest guidance, to prevent a rise in cases of Covid-19 across the region.

Chief Superintendent Zoe Thornton said: “We understand that fans will be keen to return to licensed premises and watch the match with fellow supporters on Wednesday, however, please do so sensibly and plan ahead. I also want to remind the public that games are currently still being held behind closed doors, and there is absolutely no reason, or benefit, to going to the ground.

“The match will be televised, and with hospitality venues with outdoor seating opening up again, I would encourage anyone thinking of watching the game at these venues to please plan ahead. Pubs and bars are still limiting capacity in order to comply with Coronavirus guidelines, and table service is required, so please check if you need to make a booking beforehand. Social distancing rules must still be observed and the ‘rule of six’ still applies, meaning meetings outdoors can take place between up to six people, or people from two households.

“I would also encourage businesses and hospitality venues to ensure guidance is being adhered to, particularly during busier periods. The city centre in particular was very busy during yesterday’s reopening, and we are really pleased to report that the overwhelming majority of venues were managed fantastically and restrictions were followed, however, a small number of venues did breach certain restrictions, including the rule of six and table service guidance, and we are working closely with partners at Liverpool City Council to address this.

“We are making positive steps in moving forward with the government roadmap out of lockdown, and it’s crucial that the most recent guidelines are followed so that we can continue to progress. Our communities have pulled together during a challenging year and we hope that before long, fans will be able to return to live sporting events safely. However, until then, please enjoy the game responsibly and without breaching any restrictions.

“A comprehensive policing operation has been put in place ahead of Wednesday evening, and we’ll have patrols on duty at the ground, surrounding area, the city centre, and other areas across Merseyside.

“As always, we will be working closely with Liverpool FC and other partners, to keep a close eye on all of our key locations and ensure that people are kept safe and discouraged from gathering inappropriately.”

“If you have any concerns on the day, report them to us via 999 in an emergency, or through passing information via @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, and we’ll take the appropriate action."

I suppose the low level intelligence of Liverpool supporters forces the Police to issue warnings like this.

    Well they didn’t disappoint.

    FROM MERSEYSIDE POLICE

Chief Superintendent Zoe Thornton said: “We can confirm an investigation is underway after damage was caused to the Real Madrid team bus this evening, as it approached Anfield Stadium ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League match with Real Madrid.

“Despite the advice to avoid attending the ground, approximately 400 people attended Anfield Road and as coaches approached, a number of items were thrown at the Real Madrid team bus. We are aware of images which show the outer pane of the lead coach window being damaged, the glass did not break through and there are no reported injuries.

“A number of pyrotechnics were also lit in the area, which significantly reduced visibility and could have put other people in danger.

"As with all matches, we have worked very closely with both clubs to ensure the safety of the public and the teams themselves, and the disgraceful behaviour of those involved this evening is extremely disappointing and totally unacceptable. Such incidents will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

"A dedicated investigation team will be reviewing CCTV footage from the area, along with our own body worn camera footage, and working closely with the club to identify those responsible. I would also ask anyone who was in the area and captured mobile phone video footage of the incident to please get in touch.”

How many times do we all have to suffer due to Liverpool. And they wonder why other fans despise them.

Very good, you obviously regard them as PEOPLE. I think that could be challenged in Court. They are a species in their own right just like Pnp and woodlice.
