There has been a lack of cycle facilities between east Southport and the north-south coastal active travel routes for some time therefore the East West Link scheme has been designed to deliver cycling improvements in Southport town centre to complement the strong north-south coastal cycle link and facilitate access between the town centre and the seafront. The improvements consist of upgraded crossing facilities, on-road cycle lanes and off-road cycle paths and will link east Southport to the popular coastal active travel route. The scheme once completed will hopefully encourage a shift to walking and cycling by increasing the accessibility of Southport town centre by bicycle and improving the local active travel connectivity (both cycling and walking) between Kew, the town centre and the coast.Encouraging more people to cycle will ultimately lead to reduced congestion, helping to keep Sefton clean and green whilst also resulting in lower pollution and better air quality.Funding for the scheme has been secured through the Liverpool City Region Sustainable Transport Enhancement Programme (STEP), the Liverpool City Region ERDF Sustainable Urban Development Programme (SUD) together with contributions from the Council’s approved Transport Capital Programme Integrated Transport Block and the Drainage Maintenance block allocations. The scheme consists of 6 elements detailed below:
Cycle Friendly Zebra Crossing, Town Lane KewThe works include the construction of a parallel zebra crossing for cyclists and pedestrians including dropped kerbs, tactile paving, surfacing and flashing amber belisha beacons. The crossing area will also include some accommodation works including surfacing and fencing to the existing access to the park.Cycle Friendly Junction, Coronation Walk / Promenade, SouthportThe Promenade / Coronation Walk junction works include upgrading of the existing puffin crossing into a shared use toucan crossing facility. The central reservation will be widened as part of the crossing upgrade and will include kerbed build outs to facilitate easier access when heading southbound down Coronation Walk.Cycle Crossing Upgrade, Scarisbrick New Road, SouthportThe Scarisbrick New Road works involve upgrading an existing uncontrolled pedestrian crossing in addition to a improving a central refuge near to the entrance of Kew Park. The works include the removal of the existing crossing’s tactile paving and central refuge and the construction and installation of a controlled toucan crossing with new signals and tactile paving with some minor footway and carriageway surfacing.Cycle Route alongside Fine Janes BrookThis section of works runs along Fine Janes Brook watercourse running behind Southport Hospital. The works include the construction of a new 3.0 metre wide shared use concrete footpath approximately 600 metres in length. Once completed, this will connect Scarisbrick New Road and Town Lane.
Cycle Route along Town LaneThe Town Lane works primarily include the construction of a 3.0 metre wide bituminous shared use footpath approximately 200 metres long.
Cycle Route & Drainage Improvements to the Coastal RoadThese works include the reconstruction and widening of the existing cycle track on the western side of the Coastal Road over approximately 5324m. The construction will use a permeable surface material which will aid drainage of the path.
Work is now on site and it is hoped that all work will be completed by the end of September.

The hood wearing types with no lights you describe are the cycling minority NOT the majority. These cycle tracks should make it better for all, segregating cyclists and pedestrians should clear roads for cars, which is money well spent.

Why is it a waste of valuable public resources if it frees up the roads for motorists?

Hit the like button by mistake, the biggest problem is getting cyclists to actually use them, or will the lycra clad numpties carry on cluttering up the road as usual?

Hit which ever buttons you want!
If the cycle paths are properly maintained then I see no reason for people not using them. Unfortunately, as there aren’t cycle paths alongside every mile of road, then cyclists and motorists will still have to share the roads, Lycra clad or not.

Agree as to no reason why cycle paths won’t be used, sadly we all know that even where cycle paths do exist they are still unused particularly by the “Tour de France” wannabes.
All road users are under the same rules, if everyone remembers this, we might have a chance, incidentally not anti cyclist, just anti self obsessed road users who think they are somehow special and entitled to do as they please.
Spending the money on something that would be used by many would be more use. Encouraging the lazy to move more is good but there simply aren't many people wanting to travel down the coast road on a bike especially in winter.
Safer locking bike stands in the town centre would be more use and considerably cheaper.
