DOES anybody have any photos, memorabilia or family memories of Greaves Hall at Banks?
Seddon Homes are building a development of freehold properties in the grounds of the Hall – and site workers are constantly unearthing old glass bottles and fragments of pottery and china.
Intrigued by the history of this landmark country mansion, Seddon are planning to compile a collection of images and memories for the benefit of future residents at their Hawtree Grove development.
The development, which officially launches on Saturday October 5, is located within the 124 acres of former gardens and landscaping which formerly surrounded the old Hall.
The mock Tudor Greaves Hall was commissioned in 1900 by Sir Thomas Scarisbrick, an MP and Mayor of Southport. Built on land given to him by his father as a wedding present, the mansion had 55 rooms, three lodge houses and an adjoining laundry and workshops.
The Scarisbrick family moved out of the Hall after the First World War and it remained empty throughout the 1920’s. In 1932, it was converted into a private girls school; the ballroom became the school hall and the attic rooms were re-configured into dormitories.
The school closed in 1938 and the Hall was subsequently used as a hospital – until its closure in the early 1990s. Having been empty for several years, it became structurally unsafe and was demolished the same year.
“We feel there is such a lot of local history associated with this site,” said Suzanne Hallworth, Head of Sales & Marketing at Seddon Homes.
We are very keen to celebrate the launch of our Hawtree Grove development with memories of the Hall. This is such a special rural location, in the Hall grounds and we are mindful of the many generations who have lived and worked here.”
The new Seddon homes at Hawtree Grove will be high specification 2, 3 and 4 bedroom properties. Visitors to the site are welcome and two fully furnished show homes will be available to look around, from Thursday – Monday, 10am – 5pm.
