The people of Southport are being urged to get involved in planning the town's future.

The Southport 'Town Team' have come up with some 'big ideas' for the town which they are asking for public comment on by July 20th. https://yourseftonyoursay.sefton.gov...turesouthport/

Southport's Town Centre councillor Tony Dawson is pleading with Southport residents to learn what is being proposed and to put forward not only comments on these suggestions but also their own ideas for how the town needs to develop in coming decades.

    Councillor Dawson says:

"The current proposals have been created in response to a need for the Council to bid for a fixed pot of money in a very tight timetable. But there is a much greater agenda which is "what kind of town do we want?" and "what kind of town can we actually achieve?"

"I urge the people of the town to look carefully at the Council's website. See what is being suggested and make your views know, For if this is not done BY US it will be done TO US."

"I look forward to the opportunity in a few months' time to hold proper public meetings where people of Southport and their elected representatives can discuss the town's future properly, including these proposals. Let us hope that idiocy over COVID 'break out' does not lock us all down again to stop this from happening."

"The Council closed down the Southport Area Committee just as it was about to get its teeth into these big issues about the town's future, and when we had over a hundred local people directly involved. But the people of Southport will find other ways to work together openly, transparently and democratically."

Cllr Dawson and his chums have been around for decades with no ideas, so nice to see them pleading for some since their failed flagship “tram from Asda go pier” flopped, but for me, part of southport improving is for them to step aside, they’ve had long enough so should now get off the pot as I’m sure if capable would’ve done something tangible by now rather than just trot out “community contributions” about ‘bootle labour’ and the government. With the nexus report and the launch of this fund, immediate focus was to undermine them for political point scoring, I’m sure Southport deserves better than that.

"The Council closed down the Southport Area Committee just as it was about to get its teeth into these big issues about the town's future
I thought it was closed as was ineffective and the only teeth were the ones some of the local councillors got into local residents who questioned them in the only place the lacklustre cllrs were relevant.

In other words Tony doesn't like everybody being given the chance to have their own say by submitting their own opinions directly to the council now.

He wants a public meeting where the Lib Dems can try and foist their own ideas on the public. Fortunately "a few months time" is well after the deadline for submission of the bid. So get your opinions in now folks. Take no notice of Tony.

I fear the Town Deal Board will have settled its preferences. The so-called Consultation is a statutory requirement that manages to give citizens the illusion that they're having their say. The reality is they are invited to Get On Board by choosing among a handful of options.

Councillors, apart from Cabinet Member – Regeneration and Skills, Cllr. Marion Atkinson, are on the periphery — hence Cllr. Dawson & Co. shouting from the sidelines.
