Merseyside Police have had a report of three men knocking at a house stating they were from Virgin Media and wanted to come in to do to some work. The occupier refused access and called Virgin Media who confirmed that they didn't have any work booked in for her address.

Criminals may pose as other officials, such as council workers, utility workers, police officers etc. They may also pretend to be a person who needs help.



Always ask for ID when "officials" call at your door. Verify them with the company they claim to be from by calling the company using a number from the phone book / internet - not a number on their ID card or a number they have given to you.



Do not open your door to unexpected callers without first being absolutely sure they are genuine.



Keep all of your doors and windows locked even when you're at home.


Use door chains and spy holes.


Bogus callers often work in pairs, look out for one person distracting you while the other steals from you.


Never employ trades people who call at your door. Only use people recommended by someone you trust.
