Lee Durkin has called into question a lack of tree planting across Birkdale and Southport since Sefton Council first declared its regional Climate Emergency.
Mr. Durkin said: “I’m pleased to see that reports of tree planting are now being used in election material by the Birkdale Councillors, however my question is why only just before the Local Council Elections are we now hearing of trees just being planted and not before?”
“The Climate Emergency has been in place for Sefton since July 2019, even national government clearly state that all effort should be taken to improve and protect existing greenspace, therefore why has it taken almost 2 years for us to see more trees planted on a significant scale across Birkdale?”
“There have been at least 2 tree planting seasons before COVID-19 took root and I’m annoyed that it’s taken this long to suddenly see trees going up in places like Arundel Road now after I raised the need to green proof streets previously last Winter.”
“I appreciate there are dedicated funding pots like S106 available, however these sorts of issues should not be left to bribe residents with at the ballot box. I’m shocked we haven’t actually had more new trees planted along the busy roads like Guildford Road and Liverpool Road given how much coverage on the news there’s been regarding climate change.”
“I will contact Sefton Council for figures regarding the full remaining S106 funding amount for Birkdale to see if anything more can be done to tackle this global problem. It may seem like a small thing, but in reality this would improve the health of local children and adults in Birkdale and Southport.”
“I have and will be continuing to see if we can get the most well-used roads planted with new trees, although I hope that sitting Councillors may now do the right thing and use all resources available all year round and not just before an election.”

All the more surprising then, that this eco 'campaigner' recently opposed the provision of zero emission cycle-lanes.
As we all know, a sapling doesn't turn into tree capable of absorbing significant amounts of CO2 for many years. Whereas, enabling people to ride in safety instead of driving, has an immediate and beneficial effect on carbon emissions.

Considering he's bemoaning a lack of greenery in the area I have to say it's a poor choice of photo. He's forgotten to mention which party he's standing for again too.

Say's the hypocrite who wants to make his fortune from burning trees.

Wood grown as a crop (for fuel, newsprint, construction, etc) is an entirely different animal. Because managed forestry is a sustainable process, where you find trees in every stage of development....An enterprise that fells without re-planting, will eventually run out of trees - and income!

I thought the Council planning department, said each new dwelling had to plant 3 trees. If you hadn't any land that you that you could plant on, the Council charged £1,000, per dwelling. So they could plant the trees for you.
I remember when the estate on Virgina St. was built, the builders were in 'discussions' to plant less trees and not pay the money.
