Liberal Democrat Cllr John Pugh asked at the Council meeting held on Thurdsday November 16th
How many claims have been made under public liability insurance for accidents
on Southport Pier during the last five years and what has been the cost to the
Council of settling them (include anywhere the council has acted as its own
insurer)?
Claims experience (financial years 2018/19 to 2022/23, plus 2023/24 to date)
shows that 15 claims have been received (all personal injury).
Of these, eleven have been finalised as below: –
- Liability admitted - five with total payments made of £38,430.20
- Liability denied - four
- Not pursued - two
The remaining four open claims are currently being investigated or negotiated.
Note: All values stated above relate to damages, third party costs and defence
costs where applicable.

They can't get out of it that easily. Public bodies need public liability insurance to cover such claims.
