What goes on behind Parliament doors
The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a consultation paper on the future of UK transport, which calls for a major shift out of cars into cycling, walking and buses, and "using cars differently in future", but hasn't told anyone about it.
The paper crept out on March 26, the day that UK Covid-19 victims reached 578, up to that point the largest recorded daily increase. Decarbonising Transport: Setting The Challenge calls for respondents to the debate, as set out by the Government, prior to the publication of a full transport decarbonisation plan, due in November to coincide with the UN's annual climate-change conference COP26 due to be held in Glasgow. Better late than never - some of us were calling on the DfT to think like this 20 years ago!

Right now isn't a good time to be promoting public transport of any description.

Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Bill
Michael Gove |
…The Bill contains provisions to ensure that we supersede the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 with appropriate, democratic and timely reform in order to ensure that we restore to this place and to the people an opportunity to ensure that the Government that govern in their name can command the confidence of this House and the confidence of the public.
…With both Front-Bench teams and three important Committees all in favour of this legislation, we can see already that the arguments that have been lined up for it are powerful and command wide support. I sincerely hope that nothing I say this afternoon undermines that consensus. |

Let's face it, if action of any meaningful sort had been taken 10 years ago we wouldn't now be having to consider such measures. And there will be more to come, so thank you very much climate sceptics, deniers and ignorers, you have made thing worse than they needed to be.
Maybe the floods in China will force that massive polluter to reconsider. I think America is too far gone despite good intentions now. Their fires are stinking up the world.

Agree..The later people leave it to change their ways, the more drastic the measures needed.
Imo, climate denial by people unwilling to make lifestyle changes was (and is) all part of their selfish strategy. To continue emitting, until it's too late to save the planet. Then turn round and say, well it's too late to do much about it now anyway - so I might as well keep on emitting!

I think it should have been earlier than 10 years ago. I don't think there are any measures left to us now. Not unless some genius finds a way to cool the planet without a 'Day After Tomorrow' style consequence.
We're screwed. If folk are worried about immigrants now, wait until huge swathes of the tropics are uninhabitable. They have to go somewhere.
We're on the 6th Mass Extinction. Between climate change and our destruction of, well, everything. As a generation, we've got wildly varying weather to look forward to, as seen across the continental American north west, or in Europe in the last week. Goodness knows what it will mean for future generations.
Of course, nothing is entirely inevitable. But sadly most governments are only interested in 'what is good for us right now'. They make the right noises, but haven't the power or resources to change. Nor the will, for that matter.

Any Govt that introduces the necessary - highly unpopular - measures, would be thrown out of office by the public at the first opportunity. Just a few miles of humble cycle lane are enough to see petitions got up, businesses howling and motorists up in arms. Politicians will always put their own survival above any long-term goal - no matter how essential that goal is.

The eco-dunce strikes again,
you sell forest destroying, pollution-causing Co2 super emmiters isn't it about time you changed your selfish lifestyle and stopped admonishing others.
You are in denial that you are probably responsible for more pollution and global warming than the rest of us put together.

What about our new life with coronavirus and future virus?
The UK stands still if we have to rely on public transport.

I ride a bike and run an electric vehicle for personal transport. In fact my main leisure pursuit happens to be cycling. For the last 20 years have constantly midered Councils and Govt's to give us better, safer cycle infrastructure.
Meanwhile, my business interests include assisting households ditch their old gas appliances for carbon-neutral alternatives and 'recycling' bikes......But enough about me, pray tell us your contribution towards reducing greenhouse emissions - if you can?
