My apologies for a miss type, night staff fill shelves. We are not geared up for your suggestion, I'd happily go back to closing at 6pm and half day closing on a Wednesday and closed all day Sunday. But as I say your average large supermarket has staff on site 24 hours so they leave their doors open no reason not to. To add a question to your thread, who on here shops for their main shop between the hours suggested, personally I shop late morning 11am (ish) but I don't do a weekly shop I go several times a week.

Day staff continuously fill shelves during the hours that they work - so what do the night staff do that would be different to what the day staff do? In fact, why were the hours of shops changed at all? People were used to shopping during the hours that shops were open and made allowances for that - why did that change?

There is something called Ocado. (other delivery services available). Even without caring responsibilities, why go shopping when it can come to you.

But if the shops were only open atnight, as Said suggested, then presumably they would only deliver at night and who wants their shopping slot to be 12-2a.m?

Good points! Not sure on the 'safe' bit though, this should have been 'social' I think.

    I stand by 'safe'.

Supermarkets and Shopping centres have CCTV and security Guards or Shop Assistants that if a person needed help it would not be refused.
This cannot be said confidently for a street of outdoor shops.

The number of incidents that have occurred where the Police have requested footage from the CCTV cameras and have been refused because the camera was not working at the time are numerous. These cameras use carry a lot of legislation, which if not followed properly can result in huge fines for companies using them. Very often, there are no trained personnel present who are allowed to use them. Not all shops have security guards - even Tesco refuse to pay for a full time security guard in shops where there is a high level of shoplifting. All shop assistants will offer to help people - unless they are placing themselves at risk by doing so.
