Just a quick translation of some of the grounds for the award, for those who don't follow Africa on a dAy-to-day basis:
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has helped put an end to a long-standing conflict situation with neighbouring Eritrea.
Today it became clear that Abiy Ahmed Ali has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The war between the countries lasted from 1998 to 2018 and cost more than 100,000 human life.
Shortly after becoming prime minister, Ahmed launched a comprehensive reform programme. Several thousand political prisoners were released, member of his opposition with the death sentence over their heads were pardoned, prohibited media were made legal, and previously illegal opposition parties and movements were invited back to the country.
He repealed the state of emergency in the country in June 2018, changing the terror act and deposed military top leaders. Ahmed admitted that the regime in the country had been guilty of a series of offenses and human rights abuses and appointed a new government where half of the members were women.
Nevertheless, it is his foreign policy he is best known for. Ahmed negotiated an agreement between the warring parties in South Sudan and helped normalize the country's relations with Eritrea, including accepting the international Treaty from 2000 and thereby making peace with the neighbouring country.
In June 2018, he became the first Ethiopian leader to visit Eritrea in over two decades. The following day he signed a declaration of peace with Eritrean's President Issaias Afewerki. The final peace treaty was signed in Saudi Arabia on 17. September 2018 – the same month the border between the countries opened for the first time in 20 years.
Ahmed has faced opposition to his changes and reforms, and he has been subjected to attacks.

He sounds like a deserving winner, although my knowledge of politics in that area is shamefully poor.
I'd have been quite happy if Thunberg won, if only to see so many men of a certain age explode with rage. Although we are some way from equating climate change with conflict, but I've no doubt it will happen in the future.
I don't quite understand how a 16 year old girl with Aspergers is so threatening to middle aged men, but it is amusing to witness. I suppose a little girl like that should know her place...

I am "bilingual" in Norwegian and English, but what really amazes me is that this little 16-year old is so fantastic in English, despite using Swedish as her day-to-day language. (Both her parents are Swedish so she has been brought up using that language). On top of that, I find myself agreeing with her more and more, the more I listen to her. And I'm no middle-aged man - I'm 80 in three weeks!

You have the wisdom of age and intellect to match. Shame there isn't more of that around.
I think she's a brilliant orator for her age, and considering her disability. She's certainly appealing to all ages, apart from those angry right wing middle aged men (and women, shout out to the Katie Hopkins type).
Perhaps they just enjoy punching down.
She's highlighting a world wide problem, and she's reaching millions. No bad thing in my book.
