    Unhappy Town Deal arrives

    Damien Moore said:
“At a time when families are under huge financial pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the decision to impose nearly 5% rises on people’s Council Tax bills is truly abominable.
“This will mean an extra £72.44 a year for people paying a Band C Council Tax bill.
“This is particularly galling after this incompetent Labour Council bought the Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle at a cost of £32.5million.
“This huge waste of money has lost £1.5million this year alone, so people in Southport are now having to pay for the mistakes of councillors in Bootle.
“Between 2017 and 2019 the value of the Strand shopping centre fell by £5million. I dread to think what it would be worth now - not very much.
“Local residents will be paying for this blunder for years to come.
“In Southport, the Labour-led Sefton Council is destroying local businesses and livelihoods by taking away vital car parking spaces in Southport town centre by imposing unnecessary cycle lanes instead.
“The removal of parking spaces on Hoghton Street alone will cost the council £137,000 in lost revenue each year.
“In contrast, this Government is investing substantially in Southport, with £37.5million this week announced via Southport Town Deal to bring new jobs, new investment and new hope."
    1. appalled, Damien Moore declaims
      • abominable Council Tax rise
      • Bootle Strand acquisition by the Council

    2. beneficence from central government (i.e. Town Deal) to offset centrally imposed austerity [notably in the case of Town Deal, directed to vulnerable Conservative-held constituencies]

It is reported today that the entire House of Commons — MPs, Ministers, the PM plus SPADs — are to be strictly quarantined on South Georgia.

A Royal Navy task force is establishing temporary buildings for the MPs and assorted others.

The good news is the Palace of Westminster can now be demolished to make room for a phallic glass and steel commercial plus residential high rise with stunniing views of the other phallic high rises lining the Thames.

The best thing about fake news is if you make it up yourself, then you can guarantee it is fake!

MP’s will be panicking about becoming infected themselves, and having to live on the £94 Statutory Sick Pay that Joe Public is expected to do.

News Town Deal — how the money will be spent?

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced the sum for Southport after backing the town’s impressive Town Deal submission for funding.

Details of exactly how the money will now be spent will be revealed over the course of 2021.

    Paul Johnson, IFS says …

Paul Johnson, Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies writing today in his capacity as contributor to The Times newspaper makes a couple of interesting points.
    1. There is an element of haste in the government's proclaimed intention to Level-up. He suggests that the adage 'haste makes waste' applies in spades to government departments given cash to burn!
    2. The process of leveling-up is a generation-long endeavour (even with the best intentions).
The money sprayed around in last week's budget is unlikely to be enough to accomplish the Chancellor's claims for it.

    News re: Town Deal Fund

The process of Developing an evidence based Town Investment Plan for Southport as per the Towns Fund Prospectus (p. 19) looks very much like a rather un-representative stitch-up complete, as it is, with an elaborate faux consultation process. The Board is comprised as follows:
    • the Council
    • the MP !!
    • Local Enterprise Partnership
    • Business Improvement District
    • local businesses and investors
    • . . .
    • communities!
Communities in this context being defined as:
Each town will decide how best to involve their local community, building on the MyTown campaign. Communities should have a meaningful role in decision-making for the future of their town, and Town Deal Boards should draw on the local knowledge and insight that communities can provide on the barriers to driving local growth and productivity. We expect this to be achieved by including community representatives from prominent local civic and faith organisations in the governance structure, such as representatives from local community forums, voluntary and community sector organisations, or Councils of the Voluntary Sector.

China has started easing restrictions, hoping to get its industrial output and exports back on track.
Teams of Chinese medical personnel have been dispatched to European and African countries to assist their local counterparts. Also, the Chinese have been ramping up their production of respirators and other medical devices, hoping to capitalize on the crisis.
