That's the rubbish called 'instant coffee' - the real stuff doesn't dissolve.

Of course it dissolves - how on earth do you imagine it gets the colour and taste in a filter machine, cafetière, posh machine or jug, leaving the coffee grounds (beans) behind.
True the grounds don’t dissolve but what you drink clearly has done!
R&G coffee tastes quite different to instant because it is freshly made whereas Nescafé etc do the work for you and then ‘dry it out’ into powder.
Incidentally: initially ‘instant’ is all powder but many people think granulated is somehow better so some goes through a granulating process and costs more!
Well it did 20+ years ago when I was at Nescafé doing a project for a science fair.

You can buy instant tea too. You shouldn't, but you can.

Many people do not go for the taste of coffee anymore - they will serve/drink instant coffee because it is more convenient.

Is that why there are coffee shops on every other corner and at most garages, all selling fresh coffee not instant

I would have thought it was the exact opposite. When I lived in the UK, most people made instant coffee ( yuck) at home. Nowadays ground coffee is much more prevalent. And, as Alikado says, everywhere outside the home sells fresh ground coffee. That certainly wasn't the case years ago. In 60s Southport I can only think of the Kardomah on Lord Street, which I loved, and the El Cabala on Eastbank St.. There may have been others but I can't remember them.

No it doesn't dissolve, it infuses - why on earth do you imagine there is a great big hoofing lump of coffee grounds left behind!

I find some 'quick' 'instant' foods a puzzle, you put a tea bag in a mug and pour on boiling water how more instant can it be. I've seen ready done mash in supermarkets, cook in the oven for 25 minutes? it takes less time to peel, boil & mash potatoes, in Tesco last week frozen baked potatoes take an hour? How much longer does a fresh (well as fresh a supermarket potatoes are) take especially if started in the microwave, frozen omelettes taking 20 minutes to cook? you can make a fresh on in less than 5!

Some people don't have the skill or confidence to follow a recipe even for something as simple as an omelette, so it is easier to get it out of a bag and stick it in the microwave for 2 mins or the oven for 15 mins. Sad but that is the reality today.
