Sounds like they are close to a deal, but might need another delay.

Unless that's just the EU being diplomatic. Whenever they say things look 'positive', it generally means they think Johnson is off his trolley.

Brexit could of course still be delayed or never happen but the BBC spinning that story out of that leaflet is a tad unfortunate.

Germany yesterday we are told asserted herself again as the leader of the EU. In a few harsh words Mrs Merkel effectively said to Mr Johnson he was wasting his time and the time and energy of the UK government in seeking changes to the Irish backstop. As far as she was concerned the EU needed the full backstop, customs union and single market alignment.
I doubt Mrs Merkel had phoned round the other 25 member states and checked their view on this. She does regularly clear things with France. I do not think she was formally speaking for the EU, which has entrusted this to their Negotiator in chief. I do think once again she revealed how the modern EU works. Germany is the leader, and Germany feels she can say these things, safe in the knowledge the others will accept them. There was no sudden outpouring of disagreement or protest at her reported words, nor any official denial.

You do have a thing about Germany, poor lamb. Of course Germany are at the forefront, the brutal truth is we should we working alongside all the nations in the EU, including Germany, instead we chase our tails falling out with everyone and wonder why the EU doesn't agree with our demands.

It's an excerpt from John Redwood's diary. 'Germany yesterday we are told' means he just made it up. An assumption. If there's one thing you can say about the EU, it is that they present a united front. If Merkel said that, it's a safe bet that Macron etc would all have said the same. I think she would have been speaking for the EU, or what was the point of Johnson calling her?

And why wouldn't the EU want the full backstop, CU and single market? They aren't changing their rules, we are changing ours.

If the reality wasn't so tragic that would be funny.

In the last 30 years TWO THIRDS of manufacturing jobs have gone, never to return, Thatcher started the rot, but in fairness successive governments haven't helped.

Aided and advised by Keith Joseph the Thatcher plan was that British industry must become leaner and more competitive, this meant more sophisticated machinery, less factory workers, or even simply stop production of goods which could be imported cheaper, no mention of all those involved in the "leaning".

Backed up with reducing public sector spending in the strange belief that private sector spending would grow to fill the gap, which of course didn't happen, but never mind the financial sector would flourish and fill the gap, which it did for a while, but we all know how that worked out.

Interesting article I read a while back, after the Rover/MG collapse the fortunes of 300 Longbridge workers was followed for 5 years.

Bear in mind these were all working people, not naturally dodgers and scroungers, it was found that over time 90% of these workers did find alternative jobs, but on average their earnings had dropped by £3,645 PA, obviously some more some less, with many of those workers struggling financially, having to sell homes, reliant on benefits and/or savings.

That rather bleak picture is the reality for too many, so please tell all of us just how we are suddenly going to out produce Germany or China?

I know it's hard to accept that we are actually quite good and our competitors know it.

As to manufacturing ;

Brexit especially a no deal one will certainly have short term problems but nothing we cannot deal with.

Don't worry I am sure there will be something for remoaners to complain about.

The biggest problem the country is having is uncertainty and delay caused by the extremists.

Agreed, and I'm actually in manufacture. It's a constantly shrinking market. With another big chunk going if the car industry keeps pulling out.

Unfortunately the focus always seems to be on big business. Small businesses, such as yours, are the backbone of the country's (and most country's) economy. I don't think that small business has got the attention it warrants during the past 3 years. And from various things I've read, small business owners have been quite vocal in stating their concerns. They are crucial to the economy, the government ignores them at their own peril. It must be a very worrying time for you.
