Sap as in short for Sapper, or Royal Engineer. 33 for my last unit, 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal).

The maturity comment was aimed at your inability to make comments without suggesting cyclists are ‘numbnuts’, ‘pillocks’ suggesting I grow back to my tree, etc, but you seem to lack the ability to grasp the concept of being able to comment without the childish name calling.

That’s a slight improvement, but I think you’ll find that’s 3 words, which now brings into doubt your original estimate of having seen 10 cyclists.

Good point whoever see's 10 cyclists in a day, I can cycle for miles and I don't see 10.

What a stupid comment, I don't have the slightest intention of harming or even intimidating a cyclist , in days now gone I spent more than enough time cycling, thank you.

In response I very rarely see any number of cyclists, apart from of course a pleasant day and those out for a leisurely ride, no problem, but this insistence that there is a massive year round pent up demand for cycling is a fallacy.

Simply imposing restrictions on car use, merely drives car users elsewhere, that once reason why they have a bloody car, because then they aren't restricted to living, working and shopping within a comfortable bike ride.

From your comments I believe you cycle to catch a train for work purposes, just remember this does not meet all requirements, throughout my working life, a combination of where I lived and my job, public transport was a non-starter and there was no chance of me cycling to Leyland, St Helens, Bootle or Warrington all towns I have worked in.

It had been meant as a tongue in cheek comment, as I know you have mentioned your cycling past.

    Apologies if it offended.

silver fox says: "…this insistence that there is a massive year round pent up demand for cycling is a fallacy."

    .

Who has insisted there is "pent up demand" ?

There are cyclists unwilling to brave the current traffic and there is a recognition by government that the existing provision for private motor vehicles has discouraged other 'modes' — walking & cycling (in combination with public transport, as necessary) — with harmful and unsustainable consequences.

"Simply imposing restrictions on car use, merely drives car users elsewhere, that once reason why they have a bloody car, because then they aren't restricted to living, working and shopping within a comfortable bike ride."

The current "restrictions on car use" are hardly draconian; the fuss over cycle lanes is out of proportion. Southport is not alone in encouraging Active Travel and motorists who threaten to take their trade elsewhere out of pique can hardly claim to care about the future prospects of businesses here.

The intention behind Active Travel is clear. It is a determination to gradually alter peoples' habits and eventually, the nature of towns. It is of course not clear how pending transport technology developments will play out. Plus, changing consumer habits combined with the proposed new planning regime will quite probably alter Lord Street & vicinity out of recognition, anyway.

In the near term, the fuss over cycle lanes is a tempest in a teapot.

It isn't for the struggling businesses and please remember I do cycle.

Southport's economy relies on visitors from surrounding towns who are not and will not be coming in any useful numbers on bicycles especially as winter approaches.

Please try and be a little less selfish.

A little less selfish? It’s car drivers who are selfish. They have had Carr Blanche on transport for far too long. In the long term, this is unsustainable and other methods of transport must be offered. If this means some tourists spending money in McDonalds decide to take their business elsewhere, that’s fine. They won’t come here, and we won’t go there... cos guess what.....it’s the same in their town too. At the end of the day, you’re talking rubbish. Tourists will still come, and they will still spend their money on fast food, they will just adapt and park in a different location and walk.
Now grow up, stop kicking your dummy out of your pram, get your jimjams on, mummy will be up to tuck you in soon. Poor baby can’t park where they want, boo hoo.

Unfortunately, your puerile response overlooked the part where I pointed out I cycle.

I wasn't complaining about the effects on me at all I was having some empathy for the local business owners.

An odd response as well, as I've never before heard someone paint a picture of someone being able to kick a dummy out of a pram, and of a baby being able to park a pram.

And have you any idea of what Carr Blanche is?

Could be. At first, I thought just that (although the doubled "rr" is offputting). But as the post unravelled into its stranger notions, I wasn't so sure.

Clumsy fingers hit like in error, this is just hypocrisy, people coming into town from anywhere other than local, will use transport other than a bike, as often as not that will be by car.

Wage war against the private car and those drivers go elsewhere, sure then cyclists will have the roads to themselves, hope they can then support local business and replace the missing customers.
