Conservatives join calls for the introduction of knife wands in Southport.
Southport Conservatives are calling for the rollout of “knife wands” in venues in Southport. These metal detectors have been introduced in one hundred venues across Liverpool after a string of incidents. The scanners will be used by staff to search customers to cut down the number of people carrying weapons.
Following discussion with Southport club bosses and residents, Conservative Councillors and local MP Damien Moore contacted the Police and new Superintendent Matthew Boyle to press for an extension of the scheme to Southport to ensure the nighttime economy is a safe and enjoyable evening.
Damien Moore MP for Southport contacted the police immediately outlining his support for the use of ‘knife wands’ in Liverpool and to ‘inquire as to whether there are plans to provide bars and nightclubs in Southport with the same equipment, and if there aren’t, to request that this is made a matter for consideration - and made available to all evening venues with security guards’.
Damien Moore added:
“Whilst crime in Southport is down and Merseyside has the highest numbers of police per capita of any area outside London, we need to ensure confidence in public safety remains high, both during the day and in the evening. To this end, I have spoken with the new Superintendent and requested that knife wands, as requested by club and bar owners, becomes a priority.”
Cambridge ward councillor Harry Bliss went on to say: “As a tourist destination it is very important that Southport takes every step to reassure visitors and residents that our town is safe. We cannot afford adverse publicity from an incident which these wands would go some way to deter. “
Ainsdale councillor Terry Jones said this is an important issue that needs to be addressed and he will be fighting hard to get the right result. Cllr Jones commented:
“When residents go out to enjoy an evening they should be able to feel safe in the knowledge that such weapons are not being carries into venues. Conservatives believe that this common sense anti-crime measure can help our crucial night-time economy to flourish.”

It shouldn't be the Police , Council or any other Public Body providing them, it should either be the Venue providing them or the Security Company manning the doors.

Damien going to fork out for them then as he's so keen on them? Suspect not.
...or does he want Sefton to pay for them, the Sefton he keeps slating and he and his chums have slashed the budget of?
...or maybe Merseyside Police, where he and his chums have also slashed the budget and cut well over 1500 officers and staff?
...or maybe he wants local council taxpayers to pay for them direct? A bit like the way the Tories have touted giving £450m extra funding to cops nationally but are actually shoving over half of it on to the precept so local residents pay for it... and all it will do locally is prevent some of the possible further cuts in officer numbers, not actually increase numbers at all... with a strong possibility that hundreds of posts will still be lost.
Thanks to Damien who supports this (and John Pugh who voted for the cuts) our police forces are as overstretched our NHS!
if this carries on much longer it won't be knife wands but magic wands we'll all be needing to get us out of the mess this lot are making.

If the bbc is right and the wands cost £66 each

Our local and national parties should stop posturing/calling/welcoming and get on with buying them. Assuming it’s one per venue so Liverpool needed 100, Southport probably would need 50, therefore by crude maths £3.5k which is hardly a large amount if it stops just one person from being stabbed.
Feels like the right thing to do is use ward funds to buy and work out how to get some or all of the money back by fines for those with knives, local business, council or bid money.

Quite correct, why should we the taxpayer fork out for them, the venue owners should purchase them out of their drinks providers vast profits.

Totally ridiculous, they are private companies making a profit, they should pay, in fact if they don't have them the Police should be opposing the Licences on grounds of Security.

I agree to a point that should be seen as a “cost of doing business “ and maybe our politicians could ask the businesses to do that like the ask them to pay into the BID to aim to improve on the town. At the moment our political parties seem to want to posture and point score.
However it’s more ridiculous we have people going out for a night out and getting stabbed or bringing knives on nights out so have to take a view on priority as well as the reputation the town gets when someone is stabbed when the town centre nightlife is starting to improve again with new bars opening. It’s probably little difference to giving free parking out of Ward funds to improve sales in the town when you boil it down.
