who[except me] can remember George Wrays, it was in virginia st opposite the shake & you had to go down a long entry to it,at that time it was the biggest if not the only scrapyard in southport,& there was a constant stream of rag & bone men up & down virginia st, i can remember as kids taking a couple of sackfulls of waste paper to weigh in & we had put a few bricks in with the paper & we had told george we didn't want the sacks back & that he could keep them, but unfortunately he was a bit smarter than us & emptied out the paper, suffice to say he punched our arses all the way down the entry & didn't even pay us for the paper,happy days eh i think not,regards from oz.

The entry to it was between Holland motors site and 12 Virginia st, I only know this as my grandmother lived at number 12, the house was owned by Holland motors, and went with my grandfathers job, he was a mechanic at the dealership.

Unfortunately Ken B died about seven years ago, he was one of the best posters on this site !

Yes, he was Chas. But was it really that long ago? I'm sure that time accelerates, the older one gets.

Unfortunately you are correct ~I spoke to one of the young guys that work for me yesterday and asked him how he was getting on now that he had been with us for a year. He politely informed me that he had worked for us for six years !!!

To make matters worse, I can vividly recall staying at the B & B in Leicester Street (which is now more than ten years ago would you believe?) but, struggle to recall what I'd planned to do today!!

I agree with all of the above, Ken was a knowledgeable poster who knew a great deal about Southport and it's history and is greatly missed.

Sadly these days knowledgeable posters seem, in my opinion, to be somewhat lacking at the moment on SGB.

According to Ken's profile he was last active on this site on 18/9/2008.
