Always used to walk home through Nixons Lane, because we used to cut across the playing fields. They now have padlocked gates, wonder why?

Here's a photo from around 1960. P.E.teacher Mr Bond is on the extreme right.
He was a great physical speciman back then.
If we were doing the high jump, for example, he'd demonstrate how to do it by jumping much higher than any of us could.

    Birkdale Sec. 1961

I left school in 1961 and remember Mrs Thomas as art teacher, she arranged a skiing trip to Switzerland which was great except we left on Boxing Day, travelled by train and a lot of the younger pupils were homesick. A Miss Fletcher taught games/PE and biology, I remember she got her "chosen few" to clean her flat for her. Miss Booth taught domestic science, very strict lady but a good teacher, guess I could still skin a rabbit if I really wanted to! Just sorry the education system encouraged you to leave school at 15 unless you went to a grammar school.

That's because there was actual jobs for people to do!
Unlike today, where they encourage everyone to stay in school, further eduction, college, uni' etc so they can postpone the the great awakening: There ain't any jobs, anymore.
    Great times ahead.

Mrs Parker English (one arm was severely disfigured as a result of a pupil running down the corridor with one of the old ink pens which they used to supply and stabbing her in the arm by accident)
    Happy days! [/QUOTE]

Yes I remember her very well, she was my 1st year form teacher, she died during the summer holiday in (I think 1964) she was the only teacher there who I had any respect for, given the school circumstances she was very a magic lady.

The person on the right hand side dressed up in the black binbag looks very much like Barry Twist, who earlier had attended as a pupil & returned later as a teacher.

Does anybody remember Nadine Howarth, Ronnie Lyons, John Mower/Moore. To name but 3?!!!! Nadine and Ronnie went out together for a while if I remember, a very stunning couple they were too. I think Nadine and John were cousins but not too sure? More names from that era would be much appreciated, I didn't attend Birkdale myself but knew of people from that school. Cheers people.

I was there in late sixties. I remember Christine Humphries, Dave Clark, Linda Rimmer, Val Stewart, Shirley Town to name but a few. No doubt if anyone puts a load of names on it will bring the memories flooding back. Happy days - I probably hated them at the time though.

I remember Nadine Howarth and Ron Lyons, Nadine if I remember married (I think) one of the Pedder brothers and lived in Kew Rd as her house was built on the site of the Brighton Rd Methodist church.
Nadine originally lived in Pinfold lane in Ainsdale with her parents.
