Ross.
Do a search in this forum.
yoliverpool (Google it) have an excellent Art-Deco thread (with photos) which includes Southport.
Off the top of my head, the main art-deco buildings in Southport are:
Mecca Bingo was the Garrick Theatre. 1932. Architect was George E Tonge.
Royal Birkdale clubhouse was the same architect.
Grand Cinema (see Cinemas thread here) same architect.
Floral Hall is still art-deco inside.
McDonalds was Southport Co-op's 'Beacon House', 1934.
Thorps Restaurant, Nevill Street.
Woolwich, London Street.
Cafe Nero, Chapel Street, was Burtons.
Crown pub, Coronation Walk.
I think that's most of them.

Well thats certainly something to be going on with.
Of course, the Cafe Nero is near the train station isn't it. Rather similar to Lime Street's ABC Cinema in Liverpool.
Thanks for that.

I love art deco buildings and Southport has some really good examples. South Beach Miami is the Mecca though and to think it was allowed to run down and was very nearly lost forever.

You just missed one of the best ones as they tore it down last year! (the old cinema) Does Funland Class as Art Deco or is that Art Disaster?
Also is Leo's Bar on Neville Street calssed as Art Deco as it is quite symetrical/ that type to me!

Although it was also designed by George Tonge, the old Palace cinema wasn't an Art Deco building. It was built in the Edwardian Baroque style. There may have been interior Art Deco features, I really can't remember.

Leo's Bar is Art Deco. Philip has included it on his list by its former name; Thorpes. He also has an excellent picture of it on the yoliverpool forum.

Yes Sandy, you're right about the exterior of the Palace (ABC), because it was built in 1911, but a balcony was installed in 1930 and the interior redecorated, so it might have been art-deco(ish) inside back then.
In latter days though, after it was twinned (very cheaply, it must be said) there wasn't much of interest inside.
But that wonderful 1911 exterior should have been saved.
I see Antiques Roadshow was at the Floral Hall and it said it was Southport's first Palais de Danse in 1932.
Completely omitting to say that the real Palais de Danse opened in 1925 (another design by George E Tonge).
That became the Trocadero cinema in 1929.
And, of course, some of the major hotels had dance halls.
Perhaps the most famous was the one at the Palace Hotel.

If you go down Leicester Street from Lord St and turn 1st left there are 2 white houses there in the style of Art Deco. I dont know if they are true Art Deco or whether they were later?
Nice houses - just look in the wrong place

But saved for who?
Certainly not the population of Southport.
How do you know it was saved?
Presumably all the other remains were put on lorries, and taken away.
Seeing as you're being so particular, I should have said "saved where it had stood since 1911".

It would have looked lovely all cleaned up - what an entrance that would have made to a hotel
I still cannot believe it was allowed to be destroyed - how do these people make such decisions?

It was English Heritage themselves who had the last word.
They Listed the ABC (Palace), then Delisted it so it could be demolished.
There's one in Liverpool, even older, which they won't even List, so it looks like that will be demolished. It's the Bedford in Walton.

They had no interest in saving the Chapel Theatre at Southport College...
Because (in my view)... There was a business interest there.
I suspect that they might be like-minded wherever they "investigate".
That was another disgrace pulling that lovely building down
