Labour has received a major boost to its election campaign in Southport after newly released figures showed a big swing towards it.

The figures, compiled by Sefton Borough Council's Electoral Services department, indicate that five out of seven of the town's wards voted for Labour in the recent Liverpool City Region Mayor elections. Labour's successful candidate, newly elected Region Mayor, Steve Rotherham, is reported to have polled nearly 20% more votes in Southport than his nearest rival, the Conservative candidate, Tony Caldeira.

Labour took the vote in all of the town's wards except Cambridge and Dukes, which went to the Tories, while the Lib Dems lost out in all. The figures show that Labour's vote in Southport was over two and a half times that of the Lib-Dems and nearly equalled their vote across the whole of the Liverpool City Region.

Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for Southport, Liz Savage, says that the results are a major morale boost to her campaign and show that Southport is very much a winnable seat for Labour:

"Southport is changing, people are realising that years of having a Lib Dem MP has done little for the town and they see the damage that Theresa May is causing nationally and locally, to our schools and the threat to our hospital. I believe that these results show people want change, they want Labour."

That's an interesting interpretation of the figures. What really happened in the Mayoral election was that the turnout was abysmal because few people cared and those who did care were mostly Labour voters. The General Election will be somewhat different. The turnout will be substantially higher with Conservative and Lib Dem supporters registering their vote and as a consequence Labour finishing a poor third, as they always do in this town.

Beware members of Green Party your leaders are advocating that you tactically cast your vote for the Liberals in Southport. A vote for the Liberal Party in Southport is a wasted vote, remember,
"Vote the Liberal way is the middle way to nowhere"

Can someone point me to where these Southport voting figures are published?
All I can find are results for Sefton as a whole.

A tactical vote has kept Pugh in Parliament and Fearn before him in Southport I am no LibDem but did not want a Tory in power but bit my tongue and voted LibDem but once Clegg went for his 15 minutes of fame to prop a lame duck Government up my mind has been made up NO MORE LibDem. I will vote for the Party that comes up with things that I feel passionate about and certainly NEITHER Tory or LibDem fill that criteria. As for that Kendal Fruitcake Farron if he can't stomach a vote by the British People to Leave the EU then he doesn't deserve a single vote.

These results confirm that there are enough labour voters in Southport to overturn the lib dems AND keep the tories out. So labour voters, don't vote tactically for lib dem, for Gods sake vote for labour!
