Southport MP John Pugh has confirmed that he will not be standing for re-election in the shock decision to hold a general election announced by Teresa May.

John said...I was going to announce my retirement from Westminster politics in my own time this May after what will be successful local elections.

However, I did not bank on the Prime Minister's opportunism.

The prospect of new long parliament working through the nightmare chaos of Brexit has no appeal whatsoever to me.

I aim to continue in local and community politics.

It's been a privilege to represent Southport in parliament but I feel this is the right time to step down and begin a new chapter in my life.

We always voted for John Pugh at every election, but since Brexit we have been very annoyed at his stance as a bitter "Remoaner".
Good job he's jumping ship, because we wouldn't ever vote for him again.
Neither I suspect, would many others.

    Bye...

And for goodness sake, don't bung him in the Lords. It is already packed to the gunnels with bloody Lib Dims.

Sad to see him depart. A man of principle is a rare creature these days. Hope that his successor can do as well

As a matter of interest what makes you think that is his "stance"?

I thought, based on his voting record, that was very much NOT his position.

    Good to hear.

Well that's what I trying to do.

You claimed to be "very annoyed at his stance as a bitter 'Remoaner'".

Is there any basis for you believing that is his "stance"?

Great to see pratnee back after thought he/she was missing post last question but I suppose purdah must not start for a bit.

Although sensible that libs didn't select Dawson even with his delusions of "decency" but as much as cllr maguire organised a good litter pick why would we vote for someone without a track record of meaningful change in office for a minority party. As for John Pugh, I'm sure he's a nice guy but I don't think the 16 years is worth the very generous pension from an outcomes perspective nor did at the last election did he say he wasn't going to give the full five years since his slamming of the snap election but supporting it is somewhat a moot point.

Interested to see you are still unable to write intelligible English.

Any chance you could rephrase that to give us a chance of understanding you?

It's a shame the local tories are such a shower. Now would be an excellent time to retake Southport for the Conservatives.

You mean sensible because it's an all female shortlist?
Decency isn't a delusion, just fyi.
Got any actual facts? I see you state you are not sure of a lot of things, and have stated as fact a lot of things that are fiction.

Dawson is delusional if he thinks he's decent based on reported past antics so it's a bit rich on the other site to be talking about inability to find a decent conservative.

What out of interest do you think is "fiction" and are you accusing the libs of deliberately picking women, if so which credible lib male would you put in.

If you don't understand that then there's really no point arguing with an idiot as much as no point asking you if you're a councillor.
