Southport felt the full Jeremy Corbyn effect last night, with the Labour Leader holding a big rally on the beach front.

It's estimated around 6,000 people attended the event despite the very poor weather which threatened it earlier in the day.

The rally had a host of Labour party notables as speakers and guests with Liverpool City Region Mayor, Steve Rotherham, acting as compere.

Former Deputy Prime minister John Prescott, who until Liz Savage's result in June was the last Labour parliamentary candidate to come second in Southport back in 1966, was also well-received by an enthusiastic crowd.

Local party chair, Mhairi Doyle, told them details of her experiences working for the DWP and the injustices she'd witnessed.

There was no doubting the main attraction, however, was Jeremy Corbyn.

Earlier in a local media interview, he'd addressed the issue of Labour never having an MP in Southport by pointing to their recent first-ever wins in Kensington and Canterbury, telling Sandgrounder Radio: "We are winning over people in all parts of the country and also areas are changing. We are on the way."

During the rally, Liz Savage was also called up on stage by the Labour leader who warmly congratulated her on nearly quadrupling Labour's vote in Southport since 2015.

Talking without the aid of cue cards or autocue, he addressed the crowd for around half an hour telling them he didn't want to live in "foodbank Britain" and slamming what he described as "the arid economic nonsense that the Tories and the Lib Dems practised since 2010.”

He also talked about how proud he was of his party's manifesto which he said was now in its third reprint. To the crowd's cheers, he contrasted this with the Conservative manifesto which he said was removed from their website the day after the election.

After his speech, he spent as long talking to members of the crowd, stopping for selfies and signing t-shirts and memorabilia.

Southport Labour Party Chair, Mhairi Doyle, summed up the visit as "a stunning success" and claimed: "This is supposed to be a Tory town but look at all these people, do you think any Conservative politician could come here and draw a crowd this big? There is huge support for Labour here and we will fight austerity and we will fight for Southport."

Yes. It was like a throw back for our "classic resort". In days of old we'd have had the attraction of a bearded lady or two. These days the freak show consists of washed up 2 Jags, Jezza the Commie Messiah and the plump professional fat-shamer of a local candidate. I suppose it all adds to the jollity.

Still, that "circus" came to town and pulled in a very big audience... if the Con circus rolled in you'd have little but the Incredible Shrinking Lady, Buffoon on the Zip Wire, and the Invisible man of a local MP... and no audience at all. Not much jollity there, just a very sad act.

There must be one hell of a lot of Millionaires on here who vote Tory, as they are the ONLY people the uncaring Party care about. Call Corbyn all you like but he is the antithesis of the vindictive money orientated self righteous tories.

Corbyn is certainly a cult figure but whether or not this country will be desperate enough to appoint a near 70 year old ultra left cult figure to lead it at the next Election is open to conjecture.

As for the previous comment about millionaires etc. I think you'll probably find that many of these people who supposedly don't give a damn or care about the rest of us are the wealth and job creators upon whom this country's economy depends. Yes, many of them are money grabbing so-and so's but a great many more aren't. The good ones certainly contribute a great deal more to the general good of this country than the Trade Unions that are the lifeblood of the movement that the aforementioned Mr Corbyn leads.

Isn't everybody with a job a wealth creator? I'm a wealth creator and I'm voting for Corbyn's Labour.

Not if the job is in the public sector. It's then a wealth depleter using up what others have earned.

Choosing where to shop isn't likely to be terminal.

Being good Christian people they are very kind to everyone. It tends to be the crypto-commie atheists that get all shouty and totalitarian.... when they're not terminating you for being too old, too disabled, or too inconvenient. Choose Life, Trotty, not the way of Jezza the False.

Very kind to everyone? Tell that to the clientele at McGurk's Bar.
