With bridge maintenance hitting the headlines after the Italian disaster in Genoa, it's good to know that the county's bridges are in safe hands.

And observant drivers will notice that a £350,000 scheme to update the busy Pinfold Bridge over the Leeds-Liverpool canal in Scarisbrick is now finished - not that you'll see any difference on the road with work completed underneath the carriageway.

Yesterday, a County Council PR officer told QLocal: "Pinfold Bridge is an early reinforced concrete bridge, having been built between 1913 and 1914.

When the A570 was de-trunked a number of years ago, it became the responsibility of Lancashire County Council.

"We inspected the bridge and agreed that maintenance was needed to replace sections of concrete which were in poor condition, and the work which took place over the first half of this year involved removing concrete from the underside of the bridge deck using high pressure water jets, before spraying on new concrete.

"The concrete was replaced in sections in order to keep the road and the canal open, and minimise disruption."

That's not Pinfold Bridge.

Never in the memory of man has this been Pinfold Bridge, but I'm sure some cross-grained tom-fool will pop-up on here soon to attempt to prove us wrong...

If you look at Ordnance Survey maps from around about 1900, they all refer to it as Scarisbrick Bridge. It is on the edge of Pinfold which extends further towards Ormskirk, Pinfold Lane and Pinfold Primary School.
