Weld Road is to be closed from the 25th May for up to 2 weeks for essential resurfacing. The section outside the Fishermans Pub is in a terrible state and is one of the worst surfaces in Southport.
Local diversions will be in operation.

About time to. It will be interesting what the finished product will be, quality that is, as some of the so called resurfacing around town has been shambolic. Most of the new surface ends up in the gutter. At least its going to be done.

I just hope that they investigate the 3 'sink holes' in the middle of the road while they are at it, or it may be as bad again in no time.

As a van driver I think this is great news,I disagree with shambolic statement as when I drive to other areas, southport is always improving and repairing,,Nothing is in the gutter, thats old hat,,,Why are you so angry at improvements?,doesnt make sense,

I'm a van driver as well what's that got to do with it anyway. Not angry about carrying out the repairs either since we pay a fortune in Road Tax bout time we got something done.
However just look at gutters outside the Tesco Express on Liverpool Rd full of chippings from earlier and recent repairs or the ruts in other roads when they spray tar, then chippings a quick roll and bob's your uncle, only for it to break down again within 6 months.

It would have made sense to have started this after the Bank Holiday

No such thing now as Road Tax - it's VED.
The tar and stone chippings method of road resurfacing has been used in many parts of the world since 1926 and when laid according to the correct specifications for the volume of traffic, is hard wearing and long lasting.
Certainly though Weld Road at the Fisherman's Rest end has been in need of remedial work for far, far too long.

Strictly speaking the 'top dressing' is just the laying of the stone chips, whereas the actual resurfacing treatment is known officially as 'surface dressing'; however I think that 'top dressing' is a good derogatory colloquialism for the majority of surface dressing treatments that I see, usually rushed out to spend budget at the end of councils' financial year. My particular beef with Sefton is when they have spent a fortune putting down very expensive low noise road surfaces, and then 'maintain' them by putting down surface dressing on top!
However, I expect that the Weld Road job will need substantial base work to be done, which will then require some good quality asphalt on top.

Top dressing is little more than laying next winter's pot holes.

Well blow me, sorry Vehicle Excise Duty, still whatever name you give it, it's still loads of money taken off motorists with scant in return, tax is tax whatever word(s) you use.
If the world has been using it since 1926 , i'll tell you what the rest of them can put it down far better than over here!! So to so called "correct spec, traffic etc" we don't do that then do we? As they wouldn't have to come back within 12 months to do it all over again.

Agreed. For all that top dressing is worth they may as well just sprinkle the surface with hundreds & thousands.

It has been a bad road surface since the Red Rum days, when the stable hands, and trainers used to take the horses from McCains garage on Upper Aughton Road, down onto the beach for exercising.
Not that I blame Red Rum,and the other horses were at fault in damaging the road surface, just seems a long time ago when Weld Road USED to be a decent road to drive down.

" horses damaging the road surface " ? I`ve read it all now.
Anyway, regardless of what is done to patch this stretch of road up one can rest assured that within a very brief period of time one of the National Utilities ,or the council even, will be along to excavate it up .
