Some lovely weather yesterday with thousands of people enjoying a day out in Southport. It would be nice to know their impressions of our "Classic Resort" after seeing the Pier once again covered in litter along with overflowing bins in the gardens and abusive drunks.
Having just spent the last ten days in Madeira the contrast is unbelievable the island is spotless even with thousands of tourists enjoying themselves.
Wandering around Southport yesterday I was ashamed at the state of the place.
Get rid of a Councillor from each ward and employ more cleaners with the savings.
There are 7 wards in Southport so that approximately equals £56,000 which is more than enough to employ 4 or 5 extra cleaners during busy summer months.

I'm not excusing the scrotes who just chuck litter anywhere, but today's litter bins are not designed for modern food and drink packaging.
People used to buy a bottle of 'pop' in a glass bottle with a refund on it, but now it's a plastic one, which the waste authorities tell us not to crush. Ditto cans.
Things like fish & chips used to come wrapped in paper, which could easily be screwed into a ball, but now it's a rigid polystyrene container.
You can see from those photos that most people have tried to use the bins, but they're not fit for purpose.

Not enough bins, and those we have are emptied once a day. It isn't rocket science, employ extra refuse collectors on sunny weekends in summer. Cut back in winter. We are supposed to be a resort, try running the town like one.
As for the aggressive drunks, that has nothing to do with the weather. They are here all the time. The sun might inspire them to get off the benches on Lord St and take a stagger along the Promenade in search of richer pickings, but they are always here. Look at the photo of that particular p155head. He's one of our own career drunks, not a day tripper. The place, for whatever reason, is a magnet for them. They flaunt the law on public consumption of alcohol because there's nobody to stop them.
It's high time somebody cleaned up the town, but no one has the funds or inclination to do it.

No substitute for regular emptying..
The size and construction of roadside 'bins' was effected by a series of terrorist bombings (including the IRA at Warrington) in the 80s...and since, placing devices in 'Bins'...
But as they got smaller (and flimsier) councils have also cut back on collections.. it's a false economy as emptying a bin surely takes less time than going around collecting crap off the streets....?

If you went to the popular towns on the east coast you would see very clean and well run public areas, even cleggy (Cleethorpes) where I spent a lot of my younger days, made me feel that Southport was so far behind in the tourist trade.
Very sad.

It's the visitors who are dropping most of the litter.

Surely the rubbish outside the Pier pavilion is the responsibility of the ones who own the café and they should be made to clean it up, not a good advert to walk down the pier and be faced with that.

The litter is the responsibility of those that choose not to use a bin.... but to just chuck it on the floor.
Litter wardens would make a fortune for the Council... IF we had any wardens worth their salt!

But the rubbish outside the pier café having come from their bags must be cleaned up by them. There's no point in spending millions on pier refurbishment if they can't get the basics right.

We've got an attitude problem in this country when it comes to litter. Too many people think it's acceptable to just drop it and "someone else" will deal with it because that's what they're paid to do. No sense of responsibility. It's an embarrassment in this day and age. It doesn't happen in Germany, among other places. Their streets are spotless.

I may be wrong, but it looks to me like the litter outside the pier cafe was caused by seagulls ripping the black bags open.

And when they do fine anyone the idiots on this site come on slagging them off, repeatedly mentioning Orangemen's day etc.
Can't do right for doing wrong I'm afraid.

So you put the rubbish out of site and where the Seagulls can't rip them open, it's not rocket science.
