With the summer season fast approaching this was the scene on Southport Beach today. The beach is now nothing more than a muddy swamp.Golden sands no longer exist.
Back in 2002 at an awards ceremony for the beach the now sadly deceased Bryan Naylor highlighted the decline of the shoreline.
How right he was.
The official "Visit Southport" website describes the beach in the following manner...
Located on a 22 mile stretch of beautiful coastline, Southport Beach is the perfect place for a relaxing family day out
Do you love to feel the sand between your toes and wind through your hair?
Does relaxing on the beach sound appealing?
If you answered 'yes' to these then Southport beach is perfect for you!
Something needs to be done quickly to save our beach perhaps by putting tourism before nature for a change.

With all the higher tides, and higher water tables, you don't need to dig that far down to get to reach a water level, and that is why the beach is always sodden looking, and all the vehicles going on there will churn up the sand, and the seawater beneath the sand will rise quickly to the top, hence it will always be wet near the surface of the sand.
We would need at least 2-6 weeks of dry weather to see any difference, but in the present climate, with the heavy rainfall that we have at present,it would take a long time to make any difference to the shoreline around Southport.
That unfortunately,is Mother Nature for you.

This is another attempt at sensational reporting by "roving-eye" on what is obviously a slow news day. This site is an awful advert for Southport. If I didn't live here id be looking at these reports and thinking what a god-awful place southport is. But hey, I do live here and I know these sort of reports are just plain poor reporting.
It's a beach, with tidal waters and rainfall. I have many photos of the beach covered in water that make it look stunning. The tyre tracks show that it is vehicles that have churned up the sand and water, making it look a little unsightly, but it in know way detracts from the attraction of the town and its beach. Mother Nature will always impact on our environment. Are you suggesting we take on Mother Nature.? Where is the money coming from.? Be realistic.
To write a report like this is just plain negative and unnecessary. Try finding more positive news and report on that instead. But please don't bring our town down with such drivel.

Only time the council do any beach management is to make sure they can get cars on it for the deluded who go to the air show. Same displays take place in Blackpool and are free! That's a council that wants tourists. Sefton think Crosby has a beach, try riverbank instead

I don't think it is anything to do with climate - but more to do with the closure of the sand extration plant !
When this was going - the tides were not as high and we had a greater degree of sand replacement. As soon as this was shut the tides started coming in far closer to the shore !

It just panders to the majority of its audience ie a bunch of miserable sods who can't accept things aren't the same as they were in the 1950s.
I'm not sure exactly what they'd expect soft wet sand to look like after a Land Rover had driven over it.

It's a beach, there shouldn't be any vehicles on it, nowhere else has beach parking.
