QLocal's once again delighted to publicise another in the series of looking back events organised by Michael Dawson and friends...
Yes, it's time for another 'Images of Burscough and Surrounding Areas' exhibition, a free two day event being held in the main hall of The Stanley Club, Burscough on the weekend of 24th - 25th November (10am - 5pm).
Mayor of West Lancashire Cllr Noel Delaney will be opening the event at 10am Saturday morning, along with Stuart and Lynne Grey (relatives of Ernest Rosbottom; many of Ernest's photos will be on display).
And there are lots of new photos, local films and memorabilia including a recent addition to Michael's collection of two 8 inch diameter Mortar Shells from the siege of the original Lathom House (or Lathom Castle) in 1644. They weigh 13kg's (just over 2 stone) each and were found in the grounds of the second Lathom House when it was demolished in 1925. The current excavation site is the project of North West Heritage.
There will also be four very large canvas prints showing aerial images of Burscough from 1970 and Ormskirk Town Centre area from 1959.
There is free parking at the rear of the Stanley Club, free teas and coffees along with Ormskirk Gingerbread and Lemon Slab cake to sample, plenty of gifts to buy including the groups new 2019 Calendar, and a raffle. Mike's also produced a new range of free local history information sheets to take home.
Also attending for the weekend will be 'Paul Smith ORMSKIRK Museum' with a display of artefacts and photos; Paul has a great knowledge of Ormskirk and its buildings; his enthusiasm for local history is second to none.
'Ormskirk and District Family History Society' will also be there - so if you need advise with your own family history research then these are the people to see.
Richard Houghton of 'Lathom & Burscough Military Heritage Society' has a wealth of knowledge on this subject, and can help with any questions you may have. He will also have a large display over the weekend.
Also there for the weekend will be Alan Barrow who will be launching ‘The Airmen of West Lancashire - Roll of Honour WW2’ containing the profiles of 46 aircrew, and 16 ground crew from rural West Lancashire who gave their lives in RAF service - if you know of any of the West Lancashire airmen and you have any photos/information then please bring it along to show him.
Said Mike: "It would be great to see as many people as possible turn up to support this community event and as I always ask, if you have any old photos related to our local area (even old film footage), please bring them on the day as I will have my laptop and scanner ready to make a copy, then everyone gets to share in our local heritage."
