The long-haired Englishman cards six over for the day after a rough front nine was followed by bogeys at the 16th and 17th, and has one heck of a challenge on his hands if he's to make it a long weekend at Birkdale.
Home favourite Tommy Fleetwood hasn't started the way the Southport crowd would have been hoping, but he still gets a healthy applause on his way down to the 18th green.

Not half! I backed him months ago at 66/1.
Local lad used to the conditions and a load of Yanks play like they've always played here. He needs our avian friends Birdie/Eagle/Albatross to help him now. He only needs a 13/14 under round to grab their shirt tails. Most probably he'll be among the Speccies tomorrow.
