Four high value bikes have been stolen from two sheds/garages in shed burglaries in different areas of Southport over the last 7 days. It seems likely that these bikes have been specifically targeted and other high value bikes may be targeted in similar burglaries.

We will be organising more bike marking events over the coming weeks. Watch this space for dates/locations. Frame number registration helps us to return stolen bikes to their rightful owners, but it doesn't stop bikes from being stolen. Only substantial locks will secure your bikes.

Clearly, there is a need to keep bikes secure, even when left inside sheds/garages.
Use quality padlocks on sheds/garages and make sure there are no other weak points, such as flimsy hasps etc. Criminals will look for weaknesses in your security.
Consider adding a shed alarm/CCTV inside your shed/garage.

Use multiple locks to secure bikes to other heavy or unmoveable items.

Keep bikes covered and not visible through windows.

If you use tracking apps, start and end your ride away from your home address and be wary of sharing rides on apps or social media.

Don't leave bikes visible on car roofs outside your address.

Bike thefts are often reported some time after the theft, with little evidence to follow. If you become aware of a theft in action, always dial 999 so we can respond straight away.

Investigations into the other recent thefts continue.

Im afraid from experience, the police do nothing. They didn’t even come and investigate £4K worth of two stolen bikes. Just got a crime reference number.

Get the bike registered on bikeregister.com many Police Forces check it when stopping somebody on a bike or when they have a bike reported as dumped etc. My grandson recently got his returned 2 years after it was stolen.

Yeah they were registered. Been 7 years now….. nothing at all.
I think the bike register is relied on too much by the police. Rather than investigate, it’ll appear at some point…

There are usually quite a few advertised on Gumtree locally but I think the thefts are organised, the bikes, lawnmowers etc will be moved to another area, the grandsons bike was recovered in Liverpool having been used for a couple of years by a drugs dealer, would have cost a couple of hundred quid to fix. Many more expensive bikes etc are stolen to order there is a thriving market for goods that are of dubious origin.
