Another well known Southport pub shuts its doors.
The Old Ship public house on Eastbank Street has closed down. The pub had denied rumors that it was closing at the start of the week but sadly the doors are now shut.
Traditional pubs are being replaced by micro pubs and trendy bars but how long will they last with their inflated prices?

Very sad really, there is room hopefully for trendy "micro" brewery pubs and trendy bars as well as the traditional boozer and the "Old Ship" is a good example of a good old pub.
I know its the other end of the spectrum but if you go to London many an old pub thrives, its a question of "footfall" in the end!

A case of use it or loose it I guess. This pub must have been the latter.

Not necessarily. One of the biggest problems that pubs have today is the very high prices charged for rent and for the alcohol as well.
Pub landlords are tied to a certain brewery and have to pay whatever the brewery charges for drinks. This means after all expenses have been paid out, the amount left for wages for the landlord is/can be ridiculously low.
Maybe the present landlord had enough and no-one else wants the tenancy.
p.s.
Pubs are also facing competition from supermarkets and the like and the fact that a lot of people prefer to stay in and drink.
