Southport residents are being invited to a Halloween event with a difference on Monday October 31st.

Southport Community Centre on Norwood Road is staging a family-friendly alternative to the normal spooky activities in the form of its first-ever Lantern Carnival which takes place between 5pm-7pm.

Centre staff say the free event is aimed at families with small children who may be too young to enjoy the traditional ghoulish elements of Halloween, but still want to take part in the celebration in a safer, quieter way.

Resident artist Graham Wareing will be working hard to provide a fun-packed evening for guests with colleagues from Sefton CVS and the Brighter Living Partnership who run the centre.

Children will be invited to build fairy glow lanterns and light tube creatures and then parade them in the centre’s new floodlit nighttime community garden.

And everyone who attends will be offered a hearty dish of spicy pumpkin soup prepared by Brighter Living staff and volunteers.

Southport Community Centre Manager, Philip Blocksidge, commented: “Not everyone enjoys the scarier parts of ‘fright night’, especially younger kids who may not like dressing up as ghosts and ghouls.

“Our Lantern Carnival is a way for them to get into the spirit of things, and celebrate the changing of the seasons and the onset of autumn, in a safe and friendly environment.”

Southport Community Centre is located near to the junction of Norwood Road and Sussex Road/Peel Street.

Whilst I agree that 'sky lanterns' look fab.... I cannot help but advise that they are also dangerous in so far as they can cause fires.... if they happen to land in the wrong place.
