A Southport fundraising group hosted their annual golf day at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
The event which took place on Friday 7th September at the Iconic Golf Club raised over £17,000 and was attended by regular corporate friends of the fundraising committee. Stephen Oakes, Branch Director at Santander Southport and colleagues assisted with the raffle and in doing so boosted the amount raised through their company match funding scheme. A further surprise donation was received from regular attendee Jamie Tinsley, Managing Director of Northampton-based Amaray Europe.
The full day was a huge success, the rain stayed away and some great golf was played, new business networks developed and an amazing amount was raised.
Chairperson of the group Gill Hedge was delighted with event and is very grateful to the companies that return year upon year from as far as the South Coast to be at the day. Since the fundraising group began in 1971 they have raised an astounding amount of £600,000 through holding a series of fundraising events and activities.
Jo Moss Cancer Research UK’s local fundraising manager for Southport said: “The Southport Group of friends are an absolute inspiration and we can’t thank them enough for their commitment to helping Cancer Research UK beat cancer sooner. It is a pleasure to be able to work alongside them. I would also like to thank Jamie Tinsley from Amaray and Stephen Oakes from Santander for their additional support in ensuring that this amazing amount was raised.
“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. However, we have only been able to achieve this thanks to the dedication and generosity of volunteers and supporters like The Southport Group of friends without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses.”
